Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Before reaching Memphis, the Vancouver Grizzlies reached a couple of milestones.

The Grizzlies notched the 100th win in franchise history and tied the club mark for victories in a season with an 86-78 triumph over the Los Angeles Clippers.

"I didn't even know tonight was it until after the game," said center Bryant Reeves, the club's first draft pick in 1995. "I would have hoped it came sooner than this but this is a milestone and it's something to be thankful for."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 24 points and Tony Massenburg added season highs of 14 points and 11 rebounds for Vancouver, which improved to just 100-353 at the tail end of its sixth season -- and last one in Canada.

Grizzies owner Michael Heisley has applied for relocation to Memphis and seven of his fellow owners on the NBA's relocation committee will decide the team's fate over the next four months.

The win moved Vancouver to 22-53, matching last season's total. The Grizzlies have seven games to break the mark and avoid 60 losses in a full season for the first time in franchise annals.

"This is as well as I've seen us play this year," Massenburg said. "We were coming down and executing. It worked and it worked real good."

"Certainly we want to win more games than we did last year," Grizzlies ccoach Sidney Lowe added. "We want to do better than we did last year."

It was fitting that the milestone-laden win came against the Clippers, who fell to 12-12 in the all-time series. Los Angeles is the only Western Conference team against which Vancouver does not have a losing record.

Lamar Odom came up just short of his fourth triple-double in six games with 18 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for the Clippers, who have lost eight straight road games.

"I'm not going to sit here and talk about how badly we played," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "We played badly because they made us play badly and all that credit should go to them."

Los Angeles held a 43-36 lead after Cherokee Parks hit a jumper in the first minute of the third quarter. But the Clippers went scoreless over the next 8:20 as the Grizzlies scored 21 straight points.

Michael Dickerson scored nine of his 15 points in the run, which Massenburg capped at 57-43 with a layup with 3:04 remaining. It matched the biggest run in franchise history as Vancouver also scored 21 in a row against New Jersey on January 29.

"I don't think you can let a team go on a 19-0 run and expect to win the game," Gentry said. "We just (stunk)."

In the fourth quarter, Los Angeles got within four points on several occasions, the last time at 71-67 on a runner by Jeff McInnis with 4:44 to go. But Mike Bibby and Abdur-Rahim scored to double the lead and Vancouver held on.

Bibby had 14 points and 13 assists for the Grizzlies, who shot 44 percent (33-of-75) and held a 48-31 advantage on the boards.

"Tony Massenburg was big for us inside, getting rebounds and scoring for us late in the game," Lowe said. "But I thought the guy that really stood out tonight was Bibby. I thought he was aggressive on both ends."

Corey Maggette scored 15 points and rookie Darius Miles added 11 for the Clippers, who shot 40.5 percent (30-of-74).
