Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal scored 39 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Los Angeles Lakers coasted to a 100-88 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

Los Angeles moved into third place in the Western Conference, one-half game ahead of Dallas and Utah. The Lakers (50-26) remained one game behind Pacific Division leader Sacramento (50-24).

Isaiah Rider scored six points and O'Neal had four as Los Angeles opened the fourth quarter with a 14-5 spurt, building its largest lead at 96-80 with 6:40 remaining. The Lakers held the Bulls to 13 points in the final 12 minutes.

"We came out in the second half and played better defense," Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson said. "Shaq was really overwhelming out there. He got into his rhythm later in the game."

Chicago climbed within 61-58 with 8:36 to go in the third quarter on two free throws by Fred Hoiberg. Derek Fisher and Devean George each had four points as the Lakers ran off eight straight for a 69-58 advantage with just over seven minutes remaining.

After O'Neal dunked for an 82-71 lead with a minute left in the third quarter, Bulls rookie Jake Voskuhl tried to answer by driving into O'Neal. Voskuhl rammed straight into the Lakers superstar and crashed right to the ground, rolling into referee Joe Crawford, who whistled O'Neal for a flagrant foul.

"He was coming at me 80 miles per hour and he hit a brick wall," O'Neal said. "I just stood there. When you hit a brick wall, you fall."

Brian Shaw was hit with a technical foul for arguing the call and as Hoiberg prepared to shoot the free throw, Crawford hit O'Neal with a technical as well. Hoiberg made both technicals and rookie A.J. Guyton added a basket as the Bulls closed to 82-75 heading into the final period.

But Rider and Fox opened the fourth quarter with baskets to stifle Chicago's momentum and the lead never dipped below 10 points the rest of the way. The Bulls made just 3-of-14 shots in the fourth quarter.

"I thought Los Angeles played well," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "Shaq was really a load for us tonight. He is truly the most dominant guy in this league and forces you to do a lot of things around him in terms of his approach."

O'Neal made 13-of-17 shots and 13-of-22 free throws to go along with five assists. Horace Grant was the only other Laker in double figures with 10 points while George and Rick Fox each added nine. Los Angeles outrebounded Chicago, 44-36.

"We usually have trouble against teams like this," O'Neal said. "We did what we had to do to get a win. It took a while, but we did get it at in the end."

The Lakers played without Kobe Bryant for the second straight game and Jackson distributed minutes evenly among his reserves. Rookies Mark Madsen and Mike Penberthy each received 17 minutes and the duo combined for 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Los Angeles' bench outscored Chicago's non-starters, 28-24.

The Lakers outscored the Bulls, 50-12, in the paint, led by O'Neal's onslaught.

"I did what I do best and everybody is little against me," O'Neal said. "I just want to take high percentage shots and take it to the basket."

Brad Miller scored 21 points and Elton Brand added 17 for Chicago, which has lost six in a row. Hoiberg finished with 14 points and Guyton added 12 off the bench.

The youth movement continued for the Bulls as they used six rookies and a pair of second-year players in capping a 0-5 homestand.

Chicago played without guard Ron Mercer, who did not dress due to tendinitis in his right ankle.
