Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Tim Hardaway used his hands and his mouth to help beat the Charlotte Hornets.

Hardaway handed out a season-high 12 assists and trash-talked Jamal Mashburn into two crucial misses at the line as the Miami Heat posted a critical 81-76 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Miami (45-30) pulled into a tie with New York for second place in the Atlantic Division. The Heat will host the Knicks on Sunday.

Alonzo Mourning's fallaway jumper with 1:33 left to play gave Miami the lead for good at 75-74. Mashburn was fouled and went to the line 12 seconds later.

After Mashburn missed the first free throw, Hardaway kept up a running commentary with his ex-teammate before the second. Mashburn turned around to respond but promptly missed the second as well. Hardaway was coy about the episode afterward.

"I didn't tell him anything," Hardaway told the media. "It's not what you guys think."

On Miami's next possession, Dan Majerle missed a 3-pointer as the shot clock ran down but Brian Grant pulled down the offensive rebound. The Heat ran down the shot clock again and Hardaway found Majerle, who nailed a 3-pointer with 29 seconds left for a 78-74 advantage.

"(Majerle) got his feet set and there was good ball movement," Charlotte guard David Wesley said. "There was a double screen on the other side of the floor and he knocked down the shot."

After a basket by Elden Campbell, Anthony Mason made two free throws with 9.4 seconds left for an 80-76 lead that sealed the victory.

"I thought it was one of the first games in a week that we really fought to win the game and not expect that the game could just be won," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We just kept making shots. Making shots are a by-product of a team that is fighting to win."

Mason scored 22 points and Majerle finished with 13 for Miami, which split the four-game season series with Charlotte. Mourning added 12 points and five rebounds.

Although Hardaway did not score and missed all seven shots, his passing helped set up Mason and Majerle as the Heat were able to mount a fourth-quarter rally. Miami outscored Charlotte, 21-12, in the final 12 minutes.

"He definitely was in the mode of trying to pass," Riley said. "He was being blitzed and trapped on every single thing. That's considered the norm now. They're just not going to let him play."

Mashburn led Charlotte with 20 points and nine rebounds but was held scoreless in the fourth quarter while being defended by Mason. Wesley and Baron Davis each added 15 for the Hornets, who fell into third place in the Central Division, one game behind Toronto.

"They're a pretty good defensive ballclub and it was a playoff-type game," Mashburn said. "I don't think they did any different (in the fourth). It was just as hard in the first quarter as it was in the fourth."

A tip-in by Jamaal Magloire gave Charlotte its largest lead at 46-35 with 73 seconds left before halftime. The Hornets held the lead thereafter until a jumper by Miami's Anthony Carter with 9 1/2 minutes left forged a 64-64 tie.

"We played hard, but I thought we were not efficient and this is something we have to talk about and really concentrate on," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "We had a lot of chances but we just didn't come up with the win."

Campbell added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Hornets, who shot just 35 percent (27-of-77). Mashburn made just 8-of-25 shots as Charlotte fell for the fifth time in its last six road games.
