Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Minnesota Timberwolves posted their 10th straight home win and moved closer to clinching the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with a 101-88 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Kevin Garnett scored 25 points for the Timberwolves, who moved 4 1/2 games ahead of the Houston Rockets with only seven contests remaining. Minnesota has won seven of its last nine games.

"Our defense was extremely solid," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said. "At the beginning, we couldn't throw it in the ocean but our defense was there. We made some stops and that carried us through the fourth quarter."

The Suns could have clinched a playoff spot with a victory but dropped to 1-2 on their five-game road trip. Overall, Phoenix fell for only the second time in its last 10 contests.

"The score was not an indication of how they dominated," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "With the ease (with which) they were scoring, when we were down eight points, it felt like 20. I felt from beginning to end, they totally outplayed us in every part of the game."

Reggie Slater scored 14 points off the bench for Minnesota, going 5-of-5 from the field and 4-of-4 from the line. He scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, including a layup that gave the Timberwolves an 84-73 lead with 8:15 to play.

"He is a big part of this team," Minnesota guard Chauncey Billups said. "He's a guy with a lot of toughness. He can bump guys on defense. But the thing about him is he can really score. He takes the ball right at you and he scores."

Phoenix used an 11-4 run to close to 88-84 on Jason Kidd's jumper with 3:50 remaining, but the Suns were held to just four points down the stretch.

"It was a great, competitive game," Minnesota guard Terrell Brandon said. "Both teams played hard. We were able to take a step toward moving up but the main thing is, we want to continue to win at home. We've got one more here before we go on the road."

The win enabled the Timberwolves to close within one game of the seventh-place Suns in the West.

"This is another one where we let a great opportunity slip away and now Minnesota is a game behind us," Skiles said. "The good thing is we have another game tomorrow (at Cleveland)."

Mario Elie scored a season-high 17 points and Rodney Rogers and Shawn Marion added 15 apiece for the Suns. But Kidd, who averaged 32.8 points in Phoenix's last four wins, was held to just 12 on 6-of-19 shooting while battling back spasms.

"That is due to my knee," Kidd said. "I banged my knee in Indiana. I'm just trying to favor it and it puts a lot of pressure on my back. To start the game it was stiff. My back started acting up, so I couldn't get to the basket."

Minnesota took three of four from Phoenix this season. Kidd had a triple-double in the Suns' only win, registering 19 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists in a 104-96 victory on February 14.

Brandon scored 16 points and Wally Szczerbiak chipped in 14 for the Wolves, who shot 46 percent (38-of-82) while holding Phoenix to 39 percent (32-of-82).

"We played great defense," Slater said. "Jason was hurt a little bit and some guys stepped up and really helped out today."

"He (Kidd) is one of the top two or three point guards in the game," Billups added. "You've got to jam him in the backcourt. He's so fast that if you don't, you'll be chasing him and that's. no good."

Minnesota shut down Phoenix in the first half, building a 47-39 halftime lead it never relinquished. The Suns opened their biggest lead, 22-17, on Tony Delk's dunk with 9:54 left.

But the Timberwolves gained control by scoring 32 points in the second period -- more than double its first-quarter total.

"I'm not worried about the clinch," Elie said. "I'm worried about these guys being one game behind us and they have the season series against us."
