Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan recorded his NBA-leading 62nd double-double with 32 points and 18 rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs capitalized on a slow start by the Los Angeles Clippers and cruised to a 93-83 victory to maintain the best record in the NBA.

Duncan had 10 points and seven boards and David Robinson scored nine of his 20 in the opening quarter when San Antonio shot 56 percent (10-of-18) from the field and built a 28-11 lead it never relinquished.

"Tim carried us, that's his job, that is what guys like him are supposed to do, guys like him and (Shaquille O'Neal)," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "They played him straight, they didn't want to give up 3-point shots."

Robinson finished with 20 points and seven boards as the Spurs took advantage of the absence of forward Lamar Odom and completed their third straight season sweep of the Clippers.

Derek Anderson added 13 points for San Antonio, which shot 49 percent (34-of-70) and has won 14 straight meetings with Los Angeles. Anderson and backcourt partner Terry Porter combined for 22 points and nine boards.

"We just took care of business," Anderson said. "Having two great big men makes my job easier."

Robinson had three of San Antonio's nine blocked shots. He and Duncan helped the Spurs outscore the Clippers, 46-20, in the paint.

Derek Strong scored 17 points off the bench and Corey Maggette and Jeff McInnis each added 15 for Los Angeles, which was coming off an emotional 113-110 overtime win over Milwaukee on Friday. Maggette made just 4-of-12 shots, but grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds.

The Clippers, who had won their last five home games, tied a team record with their ninth sellout. The season attendance of 561,137 is a new record and the Clippers have two home games remaining.

Los Angeles center Michael Olowokandi made just 1-of-5 shots and committed four fouls in 20 minutes.

"I thought we competed every way we possibly could," Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry said. "We tried real hard and so as long as we do that, I don't have a problem with the outcome of the game. If we play hard -- for the most part we're not going to be playing the San Antonios of the world every night -- so if we do that, we'll be OK."

Odom leads the Clippers in scoring at 17 points per game but was sidleined with a bruised tailbone suffered Friday.

Los Angeles was cold at the start, shooting an abysmal 21 percent (5-of-24) in the first period.

San Antonio raced to a 12-2 lead when Derek Anderson made a free throw with 7:53 left in the opening quarter. Duncan scored six points on an 11-1 burst that pushed the lead to 25-7 when he hit a 15-footer with 2:35 to go.

"We had a great start, we usually don't start that well," Duncan said. "We had to match their energy."

The Spurs took their biggest lead with 10:08 left in the second quarter when Avery Johnson completed a fast break with a layup to make it 33-13.

San Antonio took a 50-37 lead into the break.

The Clippers did not trim the deficit under double digits until scoring the final six points of the third quarter to close within 70-61 on Strong's layup with 1.4 seconds left.

Los Angeles closed within 81-73 when Olowokandi made a short hook shot with 6:59 left in the third. But the Clippers got no closer as Anderson made a pair of free throws 22 seconds later.

Clippers rookie Darius Miles injured his right shoulder with 25 seconds left and is listed as day-to-day.
