Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Jalen Rose scored 19 of his 29 points in an explosive third quarter as the Indiana Pacers crushed the New Jersey Nets, 108-83, to complete a stunning turnaround.

Rose made 8-of-9 shots in the third period, when the Pacers outscored the Nets, 41-12, to turn a halftime tie into a blowout at 92-63.

Indiana, which trailed by as many as 12 points early in the second quarter, opened a 1 1/2-game lead over the Boston Celtics in the battle for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot with six remaining.

The Pacers also avenged an embarrassing 120-96 home loss to the Nets on March 4. Since then, reports circulated that first-year coach Isiah Thomas canceled practice and shootaround before the game. Pacers forward Austin Croshere complained afterward that the team was not sufficiently prepared.

But the Indiana is in the driver's seat for the final spot and has a favorable finishing schedule with games remaining against Washington, Chicago and Cleveland. Indiana hosts Boston on Friday.

Rose vitually guaranteed that the Pacers will secure the final playoff spot in the East.

"We're up 1 1/2 games," said Rose, who 12-of-16 from the field, including 3-of-3 from 3-point range. "We're getting in the playoffs. If you want to say it's a guarantee, go ahead and say it. But I've been saying it all year."

Indiana has had a tendency to play down to the level of its opponent, but Rose insisted the Pacers were not looking past the Nets.

"We're not in the position to take teams for granted, especially when they beat us in Indiana earlier," Rose said.

With Keith Van Horn and Johnny Newman each scoring 13 points in the first quarter, the Nets built a 33-25 lead after the opening 12 minutes. But Indiana allowed only 18 points in the second period and took control with a 17-0 spurt that extended into the third quarter.

"We knew they were shorthanded and we wanted to jump on them but we just didn't have the energy," Rose said. "So, at the half, we and Reggie (Miller), with the combination of coach (Isiah Thomas), decided to take over."

After scoring the final eight points of the second period, Indiana reeled off the first nine of the third, opening a 60-51 lead on Rose's jumper with 9:56 left. Indiana used a 10-0 spurt later in the quarter to extend its lead to 83-60 with 2:08 remaining.

"They came out on fire to start the second half because they're fighting for the eighth spot," New Jersey guard Lucious Harris said. "They wanted this game more than us."

The Pacers shot an amazing 78 percent in the third quarter, making 18-of-23 shots. Indiana finished at 54.5 percent (42-of-77) while holding New Jersey to 37 percent (29-of-79).

"The last three minutes of the second quarter and the whole third quarter was the worst 15 minutes of basketball I've seen us play this year," New Jersey coach Byron Scott said.

Jermaine O'Neal added 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Pacers, who posted their third straight victory. Indiana led by as many as 32 midway through the final quarter.

"I think we played better defense in the second half and actually ran the floor," O'Neal said. "I think I really wore them out. We knew this game should not have been close."

Newman finished with 22 points and Van Horn 21 for the Nets, but they had just nine and eight, respectively, after the first period.

Six players scored in double figures for the Pacers, including three off the bench. Croshere chipped in with 15 points while Jeff Foster added 13 and 12 rebounds.
