Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Vince Carter scored 13 of his 33 points in a 41-point third quarter as the surging Toronto Raptors pulled away in the second half for a 100-88 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

Chicago led by as many as five points early in the third period, but Carter's 3-pointer gave the Raptors their biggest lead at 92-73 with 9:05 remaining.

The third-quarter points tied a season high for Toronto, which also had 41 in the third against Boston on November 14.

"We couldn't let these guys stay around," Carter said. "We had to put them away. They have nothing to lose. They just have to play hard. They gave us a run for our money in the first half and we had to take care of business in the third."

Still hoping for the home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, the Raptors have won four straight games and nine of 11. Toronto moved two games ahead of third-place Charlotte in the Central Division.

Antonio Davis added 16 points for Toronto, which pulled within 1 1/2 games of fourth-place New York in the Eastern Conference.

"I think we're getting close to being playoff ready," Toronto coach Lenny Wilkens said. "I think we're in good shape. I like the mode we're in. We're stepping up and that's what we have to have."

"Our main focus right now is to try to get in position to get as high as we can," Carter added.

Elton Brand scored 28 points for the Bulls, who suffered their 24th consecutive road loss.

Chicago swingman Ron Artest was ejected with 8:31 remaining in the third quarter after picking up his second technical foul during a verbal exchange with Toronto rookie Morris Peterson.

"It was me and Mo-Pete," Artest said. "He was trash-talking and we just kept talking. I didn't think I would get ejected. It wasn't that serious. I should have just left it alone. I should have backed off."

The Raptors used a 9-0 run and took a 36-27 lead on Dell Curry's jumper with 8:24 left in the second quarter, but the Bulls responded to tie the contest, 43-43, at the half and came out strong at the start of the third period.

Brad Miller's tip-in gave Chicago a 52-47 lead with 9:57 to go in the third before the Raptors caught fire. Toronto ripped off a 21-6 run, opening a 68-58 lead on Alvin Williams' jumper with 5:20 to go.

The Raptors made 12-of-16 shots from the field and 14-of-17 free throws in the third quarter after not getting to the line in the first half.

"We had a tough third quarter," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "A lot of it was our own doing. We had some giveaways that led to easy baskets."

Floyd pointed to Artest's ejection as a turning point. At the time, the Raptors only led, 54-52.

"We really needed Ron and his type of defense," Floyd said. "Ron played fine up until that point. It had an impact. He has the best chance of guarding Vince Carter without doubling him. It was our own undoing."

Jerome Williams' two free throws gave Toronto its 92-73 lead, capping a 17-5 spurt that began with three minutes remaining in the third.

Alvin Williams scored 14 points and Charles Oakley added 12 for the Raptors, who finished at 52 percent (38-of-73) while holding the Bulls to just 41 percent (33-of-80).
