Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- A quick recovery from a stomach virus for Latrell Sprewell was just what the doctor ordered for the New York Knicks.

Sprewell, who missed Sunday's loss at Miami with a case of the flu, scored 21 points as the shorthanded New York Knicks defeated the slumping Charlotte Hornets, 113-98.

New York played without starters Larry Johnson and Allan Houston. Johnson missed the game due to a sore back while Houston did not dress due to a right thigh contusion.

But it did not matter as the Knicks pulled within one-half game of the Heat for the third-best record in the Eastern Conference.

Jamal Mashburn sliced the Hornets' deficit to 72-66 with a basket with 3 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter.

New York used an 11-2 run, including five points from Charlie Ward, for an 83-68 lead with 1:23 to play in the third. But Baron Davis scored the final seven points of the period as the Hornets climbed within 83-75 heading into the fourth.

"I thought we had trouble in the post in the first half but I thought we scored inside extremely well," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "I thought our guys passed the ball extremely well. I thought we scored inside a lot better than we defended inside."

After a 3-pointer by David Wesley cut Charlotte's deficit to 94-88 with 6:26 left, the Knicks put the game away by scoring 10 of the next 12 points. Former Hornet Glen Rice scored six points during the spurt, which gave New York a 104-90 advantage with just over three minutes remaining.

Kurt Thomas, starting in place of Johnson, led New York with 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting. Marcus Camby had an outstanding game with 17 points and 18 rebounds, the sixth straight time he has recorded a double-double. Rice added 16 despite missing all four 3-point attempts.

"I found my shots tonight and I played a very solid game tonight," Thomas said. "I am still learning the game and with the more minutes I get, my game is going to get better."

New York got unusual production from its bench, despite having only nine players available. The Knicks held a 28-7 edge in bench points as Othella Harrington and Charlie Ward scored 14 points apiece.

"My bench was ready tonight," Van Gundy said. "They stepped in and shot the ball really well. Othella and Charlie really made their shots and that is what I expect from guys."

"The bench played a strong game tonight," Sprewell said. "Guys hit their shots tonight and the defense played tough, slowing down that late charge from Charlotte in the fourth quarter."

New York shot 61.6 percent (45-of-73) and fell just shy of their season-high 62.1 percent shooting against Chicago on March 17. Sprewell made 10-of-16 shots while Harrington made 6-of-7.

"Without LJ and Allan, guys came ready to play tonight and the bench set the tone tonight with Ward and Harrington coming up big," Camby said. "Every game, I am getting better and helping my team to get a win in any possible way."

Elden Campbell scored 24 points and Mashburn added 23 for Charlotte, which has lost eight out of 10. The Hornets fell into a virtual tie for sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings with Orlando.

"We hung tough and we got close but turnovers killed us and defensive rebounds killed us," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "We have lost four in a row but we have to get ready before the playoffs."

Wesley scored 22 points while Davis had 16 and eight assists. The Hornets shot 51 percent (34-of-67) but were outscored, 54-24, in points in the paint.

"Their offensive game was on tonight and their bench stepped up without LJ and Allan Houston," Mashburn said. "We thought it was going to be an easier game without those two guys but when you're on, you're on."

Both Mashburn and P.J. Brown fouled out and the fans serenaded them with loud boos, as a result of their days with the Miami Heat. Charlotte lost its eighth in a row at New York.
