Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse can do more than just score.

Stackhouse recorded his first career triple-double with 28 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists as the Detroit Pistons added to the road woes of the Atlanta Hawks with an 81-69 victory.

The NBA's second leading scorer, Stackhouse played in 430 career games without collecting a triple-double before Monday. He had 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the first three quarters when the Pistons built a 64-53 lead.

"It felt good to get everyone involved," Stackhouse said. "They were doubling me but we had great spacing and I was able to find the open man a few times. I was doing so much passing that I almost had a quadruple double the bad way."

"Stack is a good player. When we doubled him early in the game he was finding receivers and those guys were knocking down shots," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "Stack's had good games against us. The other guys stepped up and complemented him well tonight."

Stackhouse also established a club record for most points in a season when he hit a 3-pointer with 7:54 left in the third quarter, giving him 2,214. He surpassed Dave Bing's mark of 2,213 points in 1970-71.

"That was a lot of fun. I knew I had a good shot to break the record tonight but it was still very exciting," Stackhouse said. "It's a great honor to have this record especially when you look at all the great players and Hall of Famers that have been with this team. Not just Dave Bing but guys like Isiah (Thomas) and Joe D (Dumars)."

"I hope people in this town and players on this team realize who Dave Bing is," said Pistons assistant coach Dave Twardzik. "He did an amazing amount of things for this team and Jerry is in pretty good company."

Twardzik filled in for coach George Irvine, who was ill.

Corliss Williamson added 13 points and Mikki Moore 10 for the Pistons, who won for the fifth time in their last six games.

Improving Nazr Mohammed had 17 points and 16 rebounds for Atlanta, which shot a porous 30 percent (28-of-94) and suffered its 12th straight road loss.

Detroit was not much better from the field and shot 33 percent (27-of-82). Ben Wallace added 16 rebounds as the Pistons held a 63-49 edge on the boards.

Dion Glover converted a driving layup to give the Hawks their last lead, 50-49, with 7:17 remaining in the third quarter.

Williamson's basket on the next trip down the floor triggered a 10-0 burst for Detroit. Stackhouse scored six straight points and Moore's jumper with five minutes left, gave the Pistons a 58-50 advantage. The Pistons led by at least eight points the rest of the way.
