Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks have been struggling to win games of late. The Phoenix Suns almost gave them one.

The Suns nearly wasted a career-high 38 points by Shawn Marion and a 16-point lead in the final four minutes, surviving Steve Nash's potential tying 3-pointer in the waning seconds to hold on for a 111-106 victory over the Mavericks.

"We thought the game was over against a very dangerous team," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "They almost made us pay."

Phoenix did not exactly finish with a flourish but nevertheless tightened the Western Conference standings. The Suns (48-30) remained in seventh place but moved within one game of Portland and Dallas (49-29), which fell into a tie for fifth.

In dropping its third straight game, Dallas had no answer for Marion and was pounded on the offensive boards all game. It trailed by three points early in the fourth quarter but fell apart and into a 101-85 hole with 3:54 remaining.

Marion's basket still left Phoenix with a 105-93 advantage with 2:11 to go. But the Suns unraveled, scoring just one basket the rest of the way, and the Mavericks scratched their way back.

"In the second half, we laid it all out there and we didn't leave it all in the locker room and gave our best effort and that's all we can ask for," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said.

Nash, who scored 18 points, made a jumper and Phoenix missed three shots before Nash hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 105-98 with just under a minute to go.

Jason Kidd threw away a pass and Nash drew a foul from Rodney Rogers, who argued and was hit with a technical foul. Nash made all three free throws to make it 105-101 with 47 seconds left.

Phoenix's Cliff Robinson scored and was fouled. But he missed the free throw and Michael Finley hit a 3-pointer at the other end, pulling Dallas within 107-104 with 28 seconds to play.

"We knew they were going to come down and start shooting threes and they were making them," Rogers said. "They've been making them all year."

Kidd and Juwan Howard traded a pair of free throws and Kidd was trapped in the backcourt and had to call timeout. The Suns used another timeout to advance the ball to mid-court but Mario Elie moved on the inbounds pass, giving Dallas possession with 11 seconds left.

The Suns worked it to Nash, who pulled up on the right wing and let Robinson fly by before launching a 3-pointer that was short. Howard Eisley fouled on the rebound and Tony Delk made two foul shots to finally seal it.

"I got a good look at it and it came up a bit short," Nash said. "I thought it had a good chance but I realized it was short. It was straight on."

"I have been involved in a lot of crazy games, especially this year," Skiles said. The last few minutes were similar to the year we've had. Something good happened and we relaxed. We got sloppy and didn't match up."

Marion made 16-of-23 shots and grabbed 11 rebounds. He matched his previous high set February 14 against Minnesota.

"It's just a matter of how the defenses are playing me," Marion said. "I'm getting better at recognizing. I'm a lot more patient now, seeing everything. I pick my moments right and it's helping."

"He was unstoppable. We didn't have an answer for him," Nelson said. "We played a couple of guys pretty well tonight but we just couldn't find him."

Finley scored 34 points and Howard added 23 for Dallas, which has lost 30 of its last 37 meetings with Phoenix.

Marion scored 13 of Phoenix's first 17 points. He had 22 points at halftime, helping the Suns to a 58-48 lead. Finley scored 12 points in the third quarter and his layup pulled the Mavs within 78-75 with 10:45 to play.

Phoenix responded with a 14-4 surge that featured six points from Rogers. Delk's 3-pointer made it 92-79 with 6:15 to play.

Rogers had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Robinson added 15 points and Kidd had nine, 13 assists and 12 rebounds for the Suns, who shot 44 percent (39-of-89), made 26-of-31 free throws and held a 47-37 rebounding advantage.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 19 points for Dallas, whch shot 47.5 percent (38-of-80) and scored 28 points off 16 turnovers by Phoenix.
