Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Gary Payton scored 32 points as the Seattle SuperSonics picked up their sixth straight home win with a 107-101 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Seattle was never quite able to shake off Golden State, which lost its ninth straight. But the SuperSonics used 59 percent (43-of-73) shooting and 29 assists, including eight by Emanual Davis, to help post the victory.

"I'm asking the guys to finish the season playing aggressive basketball," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "We played along their level for the first half. (But) don't give up a game with a lack of effort."

A dunk by rookie Paul McPherson drew Golden State within 84-82 with 8:40 remaining. But rookie Olumide Oyedeji scored all four of his points in a 6-2 spurt to give Seattle a 92-84 advantage with 5:35 left.

A 3-pointer by Payton extended the lead to 99-90 with 3:40 to play. The Warriors got no closer than the final margin.

"They made some tough shots at the end," Golden State coach Dave Cowens said. "But I thought we had a nice game. For a change, we had a game where we shot the ball pretty well."

Seattle won despite playing without forward Vin Baker, who sat out with a sprained right knee.

"He felt during the warmup that his knee didn't feel well so right before the game, he came in and said he wouldn't be able to go tonight," McMillan said.

Rashard Lewis scored 17 points and Ruben Patterson added 14 for Seattle, which placed four players in double figures. Payton made 13-of-21 shots while Patterson connected on 6-of-8.

"A win's a win," McMillan said. "These games are tough. We turned up the defense in the second half. I thought Gary Payton pretty much took over the game. Offensively, they had no match for him."

Patrick Ewing finished with 13 points and five rebounds for Seattle. Ewing will not be in the playoffs after 13 consecutive appearances with the New York Knicks.

"I would love to be in the playoffs but we are not," Ewing said. "We still still have a job to do and we will go out there and try to get it done. I am disappointed but you can't cry over spilled milk."

Antawn Jamison scored 38 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Golden State, which dropped its 10th straight on the road. McPherson added a season-high 26 points on 11-of-14 shooting.

"What can you say about Paul McPherson?" Jamison asked. "He is doing an excellent job. I love to be around guys like him, who really care about the game, rather than take it for granted. We are playing for pride. We have got to go out and play with 100 percent effort like we did tonight."

Rookie Chris Porter scored 14 points and reserve guard Chris Garner added 13 for Golden State, which shot 53 percent (42-of-79).

The Warriors have lost 11 in a row at Seattle since their last victory, a 106-103 triumph in March 1995.

The hot shooting and 33 combined turnovers from both teams resulted in just 57 rebounds, with the Warriors holding a 29-28 edge. Corie Blount grabbed nine boards for Golden State while Patterson led Seattle with just six.

Seattle swept all four games from Golden State for the second straight season and has swept the season series four times in the last six years.
