Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Elden Campbell scored 22 points as the Charlotte Hornets tightened the Eastern Conference playoff picture with a 88-78 victory over the lowly New Jersey Nets.

Charlotte remained a half-game ahead of seventh-place Orlando while climbing within 1 1/2 games of fifth-place Toronto in the East.

"It's hard to say how much it means because (the Nets) have nothing to play for," said Hornets guard David Wesley. "They are just finishing the season. Offensively and defensively, they are not a guide as to where we should be. It's just a win."

The Hornets started strongly and took the lead for good, 8-6, on a jumper by former Net P.J. Brown just over four minutes into the game. They took a 20-14 advantage into the second quarter.

Charlotte pulled away and took its largest lead, 80-64, on a layup by Baron Davis with 6:23 remaining. New Jersey closed with a 14-8 run but suffered its third consecutive loss and has dropped nine of its last 10 on the road.

Johnny Newman scored 16 points against his former team and Keith Van Horn added 14 for the Nets, who have lost five straight in the series.

Campbell was 6-of-9 from the field and 10-of-11 from the line and Davis added 16 points for the Hornets, who shot 42 percent (30-of-70) and snapped a four-game losing streak.

"The bench production will be a key through the playoffs," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "As the starters have played a lot this season, the bench has to come out and be productive. The starters are tired and they want to have their legs for the playoffs."

Eddie Robinson scored 18 points off the bench, Jamal Mashburn had 12 and Brown pulled down 12 rebounds for Charlotte, which has won just three of its last 11 games and ended a four-game home slide.

Wesley missed all 13 shots from the field, contributing just one rebound and an assist.

"It's just one of those nights when I couldn't get anything to fall," he said. "You play long enough, you have those games."

The Nets, continuing to play without six of their top seven players due to injuries, shot a dismal 32 percent (28-of-86) and connected on 5-of-15 3-pointers. They were outscored at the line, 27-17, and outrebounded, 47-44.

Lucious Harris scored 13 points but was one of only three New Jersey players in double figures.

Charlotte's last win was a 103-88 triumph at New Jersey on April 3.
