Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant are smiling and the Los Angeles Lakers finally are playing like a team seeking its second straight championship.

O'Neal scored 31 points and Bryant had 30 as the Lakers never trailed and rolled to their 14th straight home win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, 119-102.

Los Angeles (54-26) remained one game behind first-place Sacramento (54-24) in the Pacific Division. The Lakers' lead over Utah (51-27) for third place in the Western Conference grew to two games as the Jazz fell at Milwaukee earlier Thursday.

"We have just played two potential opponents in the playoffs," said Bryant, referring to victories over Phoenix and Minesota. "It's good to beat them convincingly on our own floor. It feels like we are playing with so much emotion."

O'Neal scored seven points as Los Angeles bolted to a 11-0 lead just over three minutes into the game. The Lakers closed the first period with an 11-4 spurt, including four points from Derek Fisher, for a 34-19 advantage.

A basket by Kevin Garnett pulled Minnesota within 56-53 with just over nine minutes left in the third quarter. But Rick Fox sandwiched a pair of 3-pointers around a basket by Bryant for a 64-53 lead with 7 1/2 minutes to go.

"We're playing real good aggressive defense," O'Neal said. "Guys are hustling and playing with a lot of enthusiasm, diving for loose balls and having a good time out there."

The Lakers took their largest lead at 117-98 with just over a minute to play on a pair of free throws by Stanislav Medvedenko.

O'Neal scored 21 points in the first half and led Los Angeles with 12 rebounds. Bryant made 14-of-24 shots and Fox added 16 points.

"It was a good offensive game for us," Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson said. "Kobe looked a lot cleaner and much more comfortable. I was a little worried that he was going to be off the ball tonight. I like him on the ball because he does a good job."

The Lakers shot 50 percent (43-of-86) and outrebounded Minnesota, 46-36. O'Neal had 12 rebounds and Horace Grant added nine. Bryant also led Los Angeles with nine assists.

"I was just trying to take what the defense gave me, getting into the seams of the defense, pulling up, taking easy shots," Bryant said. "The big fella's playing great. He's moving excellently and he's playing well defensively."

Terrell Brandon scored 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting while Garnett and Anthony Peeler added 15 points apiece. The Timberwolves shot 52 percent (43-of-83).

"I thought they just came out and played more aggressive," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We have a difficult time with Shaq. If Shaq's on a roll or if they are hitting 3-point shots, they are difficult to defend."

Chauncey Billups scored 12 points and Radoslav Nesterovic had 10 off the bench. The Timberwolves' got a solid effort from their reserves, who outscored the Lakers' bench, 46-27.

"I was really happy with our bench," Saunders said. "That was a bright spot. I thought Nesterovic did extremely well, he showed aggressiveness."

Minnesota fell two games behind seventh-place Phoenix in the West.
