Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Even without three injured starters, the New York Knicks had no problems with the Atlanta Hawks.

Latrell Sprewell scored 22 points as the Knicks coasted to a 101-65 rout of the Hawks.

The Knicks played without starters Marcus Camby, Allan Houston and Larry Johnson. Camby injured his hip in the first minute of Wednesday's loss at Indiana and is listed as day-to-day. Johnson is out with a sore back while Houston did not play due to a right thigh bruise.

"One thing I don't try to do is play doctor," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "When they're healthy enough to be effective, they'll come back. I don't really know when."

New York moved within one game of third-place Miami in the Eastern Conference standings. The Knicks, who own a tiebreaker over the Heat, are trying to avoid finishing fourth, which would result in a likely second-round matchup with top-seeded Philadelphia. New York visits the 76ers on Sunday.

"They're the best team in the East," Sprewell said. "I don't think anyone needs to be reminded of that. We have a lot of respect for those guys. They have the MVP of the league (in Allen Iverson)."

The Knicks got big efforts from replacement starters Othella Harrington and Glen Rice. Harrington scored 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting while Rice added 17 and nine rebounds.

After Atlanta scored the game's first four points, New York answered with 10 straight for a 10-4 lead with 6:56 remaining in the first quarter. A three-point play by Sprewell capped a 7-0 run by the Knicks for a 25-11 lead with 2:45 to go.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Charlie Ward capped a 10-0 run to open the second quarter for a 43-17 lead with just under nine minutes to play. Another 3-pointer by Ward gave New York its largest lead of the first half at 53-22 with 5:51 to go before halftime.

"To come out and take care of business like we're supposed to is a bit of a relief," Sprewell said. "This is the first game I can think of that we played for 48 minutes and did not let a team make a run at us."

The Knicks led, 59-32, at halftime and outscored Atlanta in every quarter. A basket by reserve guard Rick Brunson gave the Knicks their largest lead at 95-57 with just under five minutes remaining.

New York has won 12 of its last 13 games at home.

Unselfish play was one reason for New York's success on Friday. New York racked up a season-high 32 assists as Mark Jackson finished with 11 and Ward added eight off the bench.

"I thought we did what we were supposed to do," Van Gundy said. "We hustled pretty hard and we passed well."

Kurt Thomas had 13 points and Ward connected on all three 3-point attempts for New York, which shot 52 percent (43-of-83).

Nazr Mohammed scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Atlanta, which lost its 13th straight road game. Dion Glover added 11 points for the Hawks, who shot 37 percent (26-of-71).

"It really wasn't much of a contest," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "They opened up with a good level of intensity, executed things very well and we kind of went to our heels right from the start. They dictated and they played more aggressive."

The Hawks' starting backcourt of Jason Terry and Brevin Knight combined to make just 5-of-17 shots for a total of 16 points. Knight had four of Atlanta's 15 assists.

Atlanta played without forward Lorenzen Wright, who served his one-game suspension for his part in an altercation with Cleveland's Chris Gatling on Wednesday.

The teams split the season series, 2-2, with the home team capturing every meeting.
