Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- In clinching home-court advantage throughout the playoffs, the San Antonio Spurs displayed what got them the No. 1 seed.

David Robinson had 25 points and 12 rebounds and Derek Anderson added 20 and seven assists as the Spurs won for the sixth time in seven games with a 111-95 pounding of the Denver Nuggets.

"If you finish with the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference and the whole NBA, if you're fearful of anybody you really should go home," Robinson said. "We are going to be ready. One of our goals this year was the best record in the league. We kind of ground it out all year. There are some really good teams out here in the West and in the league."

San Antonio last entered the playoffs as the top seed in 1999, when it defeated the New York Knicks in five games in the NBA Finals for its first title.

Robinson made 9-of-15 shots and also blocked seven shots in 34 minutes. The Spurs shot 53 percent (41-of-78) and gained a split of the four-game season series with the Nuggets.

San Antonio's Tim Duncan, coming off a season-high 42 points in Thursday's 107-105 overtime loss to Sacramento, notched his league-leading 66th double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds for San Antonio.

"It's awesome right now," Duncan said. "We're confident right now. We basically know what we're going to do in the first round of the playoffs. We have two games left to clean up some things and make sure we're feeling right."

Spurs superstars Duncan and Robinson play well together without complaining about who is the focal point of the offense. As a result, San Antonio shares the ball and totaled 34 assists in this one.

"The guys played great tonight," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "They had a purpose in mind. When David was in, we were super. He set the tone and everyone followed suit. It was a good game on both ends of the court."

George McCloud scored 23 points while Anthony Goldwire and Ryan Bowen each added 12 off the bench for Denver, which shot 42 percent and had a three-game winning streak stopped.

Terry Porter scored eight of his 12 points in the first quarter, when the Spurs took a 27-20 lead.

Anderson had a dunk to cap a 9-2 burst and push San Antonio's lead to 47-30 with 4:33 left in the second quarter. McCloud scored nine points as the Nuggets responded with a 13-4 surge to close within 51-43 on Robert Pack's 13-footer with 1:16 left.

"We just hung around and hung around, withstood their run and got back into the game, cutting it to single digits at one point," McCloud said. "But tonight San Antonio showed why they're the favorite and have the best record in the league. They're a complete team. David Robinson was big tonight, especially defensively."

Robinson answered with a dunk and after McCloud made 1-of-2 free throws, Anderson hit a pair from the line and the Spurs took a 55-44 lead into the break.

The Nuggets managed to close the deficit to seven points in the third quarter. The final time came with 10:06 remaining when Raef LaFrentz hit a seven-footer.

Porter made 1-of-2 from the line with 8:53 remaining to trigger a 26-4 run. Robinson and Sean Elliott each scored six points in the surge that gave the Spurs their biggest lead, 85-56, when Elliott hit a 3-pointer with 2:09 left.
