Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Steve Nash's jumper with less than two minutes left in overtime snapped a tie and lifted the Dallas Mavericks past the Seattle SuperSonics, 107-99.

Dallas pulled within one game of Utah for fourth place in the Western Conference. The Mavericks must win their final two games and have the Jazz lose their last two to earn home-court advantage in the first round.

"I don't know if we can move up to the fourth," Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki said. "If not, we want the fifth. We want to go as high as we can. It's not in our destiny since Utah has to lose two more but its in our destiny to take the fifth playoff spot."

A dunk by Patrick Ewing pulled the SuperSonics into a 99-99 tie with 2:26 left in the extra session. But Dallas reponded with a jumper from Nash, a basket by Michael Finley and a transition dunk by Nowitzki for a 105-99 lead with 44 seconds to go.

"We are very fortunate and I'm very pleased that we won in overtime," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We played very well in overtime. All I can say is (it is) one whale of a game."

It did not seem like an extra session would be needed after Finley made a 3-pointer for an 85-74 lead with 3:43 to go in the fourth quarter. But Gary Payton had four points in a 9-2 run that cut the deficit to 87-83 with 37 seconds left.

Nash made two free throws for a 91-86 lead 11 seconds later but Nowitzki lost a defensive rebound right to Seattle forward Rashard Lewis, who converted a three-point play to make it, 91-89, with 19 seconds to go.

"Let me commend (Seattle coach) Nate McMillan and the Sonics," Nelson said. "Even though they are out of the playoffs, his team played hard and didn't quit. We didn't play very smart down the stretch to keep our lead."

The Mavericks led, 94-91, with eight seconds left in regulation after Howard Eisley made 1-of-2 free throws. But Seattle rushed the ball up and Payton pump-faked, got Eisley in the air, and was fouled on a 3-point attempt with two seconds to go. The All-Star guard calmly sank all three free throws for a 94-94 tie to send the game into overtime.

"I hate losing but when you give an effort and leave it out on the floor, then you just have to shake the other team's hand," McMillan said. "The Mavericks made plays when they needed to."

Finley scored 26 points and Nowitzki added 22 and 15 rebounds for Dallas, which also moved 1 1/2 games ahead of Portland in the West. The Mavericks made 9-of-27 3-pointers, including four by Finley.

Shawn Bradley and Juwan Howard each had double-doubles for Dallas. Bradley finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds while Howard chipped in with 11 points and 12 boards as the Mavericks held a 60-45 rebounding edge.

"We didn't overlook them," Bradley said. "We are better mentally than we showed. Seattle wanted to play spoiler and they played very aggressively."

Payton finished with 23 points and 13 assists while Rashard Lewis added 17 before fouling out for Seattle, which had a six-game home winning streak snapped. The Sonics were without the services of Vin Baker, who had a sprained knee, and Ruben Patterson, who had a sprained left ankle.

"The bottom line is (that) we are out of the playoffs," McMillan said. "We are going to continue to work hard and to win. With all the people that were missing, a lot mof guys were in different positions but they worked."

Seattle stayed in the contest by making 9-of-20 from beyond the arc, including three apiece by Lewis, Emanual Davis and Brent Barry. Davis scored 15 points and Ewing had 13 and six rebounds.

"We still have to come to work," Ewing said. "Regardless of the fact that we are not in the playoffs, we still have a job to do."

The Sonics shot 42 percent (39-of-93) and made 12-of-17 free throws.

Dallas captured the season series, 3-1.
