Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- In a game that was over early, Jamal Mashburn scored 31 points as the Charlotte Hornets clinched no worse than the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs with a 106-83 rout of the Atlanta Hawks.

Charlotte will finish no lower than the sixth in the East and pulled within one-half game idle Toronto (45-35) as they swept the season series with the Hawks. If they remain sixth, the Hornets will play Miami or New York in the first round of the playoffs.

"Whoever we play is fine with us," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "We have to prepare for both teams and tomorrow night we'll know and have a lot to do and prepare and be ready to play. We (just) want to go to Boston and play well."

"Yeah, it's pretty wide open," Mashburn added, referring to the Eastern Conference. "We've beaten Milwaukee three times. We've beaten Philly, we've beaten Miami. The great teams usually come around playoff time. I don't think people are counting on us to do too much, and that's a pretty good thing."

After Atlanta jumped to a 6-3 lead, Silas called timeout just 81 seconds into the game. Mashburn almost singlehandedly took over and scored 16 first-quarter points as Charlotte built a 32-27 lead at the end of the period.

"We got off early and got things going for us," Mashburn said. "We played with a good deal of energy tonight and need to carry this into the next game and into the playoffs. Overall, we're coming together as a team at the right time."

Mashburn added seven points during a 16-0 run that extended the advantage to 60-40 with 5.2 seconds to go before halftime. A 3-pointer by Jason Terry trimmed the Hawks' deficit to 17 points at the break.

Atlanta made just 6-of-20 shots in the third quarter and never got within 22 points the rest of the way.

Dion Glover was one of only two Hawks in double figures with 16 points. Matt Maloney scored 12 off the bench for Atlanta, which has called a "major" news conference for Tuesday afternoon.

While team officials would not comment, the announcement is expected to involve the 2003 NBA All-Star Game.

"It's the All-Star Game," assistant coach Rick Mahorn said. "The All-Star Game for 2003. Don't ya'll read your news?"

Charlotte opened its biggest lead at 89-61 when 6-10 Derrick Coleman knocked down a 3-pointer with 8:14 to play.

Mashburn also added nine assists and eight rebounds in Charlotte's final home game of the season. They shot 50 percent (42-of-84) and placed four players in double figures.

Baron Davis had 18 points and 12 assists, Elden Campbell scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting and rookie Eddie Robinson added 10 points and 10 boards.

"If we all knew which team was going to show up, the right team would show up every time," Mashburn said. "I don't think no one expects to get past the first round and lose in the second. I don't play for that. I play to go all the way, go to the Eastern Conference finals and move on from there. Realistic or not, that has to be your goal."
