Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Andre Miller made two free throws in the final minute to snap a tie as the Cleveland Cavaliers dealt the New York Knicks a damaging defeat, 80-78.

With the score tied at 78-78, Miller drove on Charlie Ward and was fouled with 57 seconds left. He sank both free throws to put Cleveland ahead.

The Knicks had two final chances to tie. Latrell Sprewell missed a jumper with 37 seconds left, but Miller missed at the other end for the Cavaliers. New York had one final possession, but Sprewell launched a long airball while being defended by rookie Chris Mihm.

"On the pick and roll, the Cavs switched their center off of Latrell," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "Sprewell should have gone by Mihm. It can't get any better than a guy like Sprewell in the middle of the floor against Mihm."

"The Cavs switched out," Sprewell said. "I was looking at Kurt Thomas because we both had mismatches. I just didn't make up my mind as what I wanted to do. I really didn't see a gap or anything on which way to go. I just took a bad shot."

New York must win its final game on Wednesday against Detroit and hope that Miami loses its last two games to earn the third seed in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks also need a victory or a loss by Toronto to nail down home-court advantage in the first round.

"I don't think coming in to start the game we were prepared mentally," New York guard Allan Houston said. "We didn't treat this like a must-win game. Anytime you do that, you fall into a trap. Wednesday is a must-win game. We have to take the challenge head-on."

Cleveland took control by scoring the final eight points of the first quarter for a 30-22 lead, highlighted by a pair of baskets by Matt Harpring.

"I think tonight we caught them by surprise and jumped out and executed by putting 30 points on the board in the first quarter," Cavs coach Randy Wittman said. "We controlled the tempo the way we wanted with our pressure."

The Cavaliers took their largest lead on a free throw by Mihm that made it 59-45 with 6:13 left in the third quarter. Sprewell countered with eight points as New York closed the period with a 14-7 run to climb within 66-59.

A 3-pointer by Sprewell capped a 7-0 spurt and gave New York its only lead of the fourth quarter, 73-72, with just over five minutes remaining.

Harpring and Miller made jumpers for a 78-74 advantage with just under two minutes to go, but Sprewell and Thomas had buckets to forge a 78-78 deadlock with 1:18 left.

Miller finished with 19 points and 11 assists while Mihm added 15 points for Cleveland, which has won three in a row for the first time since a six-game winning streak from December 5-16.

Clarence Weatherspoon had a double-double with 14 points and 14 assists for Cleveland, which shot just 42 percent (32-of-76). Harpring chipped in 14 points and Lamond Murray netted 11.

Sprewell made just 9-of-24 shots and scored 21 points and Houston had 16 of his 20 in the first half for New York, which has lost four straight on the road.

Playing without injured starters Marcus Camby and Larry Johnson, New York settled for perimeter jumpers most of the evening, connecting on only 4-of-15 from beyond the arc. The Knicks shot 42 percent (33-of-79) and were outrebounded, 47-38.

"We got pounded inside early," Van Gundy said. "We got crushed on the boards. We missed half of our free throws. We weren't making any shots and we executed poorly."

Camby missed his third straight game with a left hip contusion while Johnson sat out his fifth straight contest with a sore back.

Thomas made 8-of-13 shots for 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in Johnson's place. New York got just 10 points and 11 assists from its point guard tandem of Ward and Mark Jackson.
