Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Alonzo Mourning scored off an inbounds pass from Dan Majerle with two-tenths of a second to play as the Miami Heat clinched the third seed in the Eastern Conference with a 91-89 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.

With the score tied at 89-89, Milwaukee had the ball with 15 seconds left and set up for one shot. Ray Allen went baseline on Miami forward Anthony Mason but missed a long jumper and Mourning grabbed the rebound with 1.4 seconds left.

Miami called timeout and took the inbounds on the left side at mid-court. Eddie Jones set a back screen on Bucks center Ervin Johnson for Mourning, who popped wide open under the basket, caught the feed from Majerle and dunked.

"It was a great play drawn up in the huddle," Mourning said. "I guess Danny saw daylight. Eddie set a good screen. It wasn't the shot, it was the pass. It was a great pass by Danny."

"That doesn't happen often, with a second to go and get a lob for a dunk," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "The only reason I think we got it is because they played a zone on the inbounds pass."

Majerle described the play from his vantage point.

"Zo was the first option," he said. "If he was open, I was going to throw it to him. He did a good job of going up there, grabbing it and putting it in."

The Bucks' last chance was waved off after the buzzer.

"We kind of gave it away to them at the end," Allen said. "I made some bad defensive plays and I don't think I got a good shot (over Mason). We had opportunities, didn't take control of it and that's how basketball is played."

A 3-pointer by Jones gave Miami an 81-77 lead with 5:42 to go. The Bucks responded with eight straight points, including four by Glenn Robinson, for an 85-81 advantage with with 3:13 left.

Jones came up with a 3-pointer for an 87-87 tie with 1:44 remaining. Darvin Ham dunked to give the Bucks their last lead before Jones had a basket to knot the contest at 89-89 with 52 seconds to go.

The game was sweet revenge for the Heat, who were beaten here on November 28 by Milwaukee, 102-101, on a long 3-pointer by Sam Cassell with less than a second to play.

Miami will face either Charlotte or Toronto in the first round while second-seeded Milwaukee is set to face Orlando. If the teams advance, they would meet in the conference semifinals.

"They are still searching to find themselves a little bit," Milwaukee coach George Karl said of the Heat. "But I know if and when they win a playoff series, their confidence will go up. They are probably the most talented team in the Eastern Conference if Mourning can play 25-30 minutes a game."

Mourning finished with season highs of 25 points and 16 rebounds while Jones added 23 points off the bench for Miami, which needs one more victory to reach the 50-win plateau for the fourth straight 82-game season.

"If we can get 50, that is a bench mark," Riley said. "However, the health of the team transcends any of that."

Jones had missed 15 games with a dislocated shoulder but made 8-of-14 shots, including three 3-pointers, in 35 minutes.

"When everybody said he was ready to go, I didn't think he was ready at all," Riley said. "He was just trying to fit in the game and run around. Now he is back to being a very, aggressive slashing, scoring player."

The Heat played once again without injured guard Tim Hardaway, who was placed on the injured list Sunday with a bruised left foot. Hardaway is expected to be available for the playoffs.

Mason collected 15 points and eight rebounds while Grant added 12 points. Anthony Carter, starting in place of Hardaway, finished with eight points and eight assists.

Robinson scored 22 points and Allen chipped in 21 for Milwaukee, which had a four-game winning streak snapped.

The Bucks played without Cassell, who did not dress due to a hip flexor. Lindsey Hunter was the only other Buck in double figures with 13 points off the bench.
