Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets finished the season just like they opened it -- with a loss.

Rookie A.J. Guyton scored a season-high 24 points as the Chicago Bulls handed the Nets a 100-94 setback in their last game of a disappointing campaign.

"We just wanted to play hard and go out and finish on a winning note," Guyton said. "That's all we can do right now and go into the summer feeling all right about us. You are always going out there playing for the future."

The Nets opened the season with an 86-82 home setback to the Cleveland Cavaliers and things progressively got worse with a series of injuries and unfathomable losses.

The team played the latter part of the season with players signed from the minor leagues to fill the injury-depleted roster.

"Obviously losing Jamie (Feick) and Lucious (Harris) before we ever stepped foot on the floor, me breaking my leg -- it seemed like we we're facing an uphill battle," Nets forward Keith Van Horn said. "I think it took me a long time to play the way I'm capable of."

Van Horn said this was his most disappointing season but there may be hope for next season as retired center Jason Williams is comeback.

"I was talking to Jason and he's seriously considering coming back," Van Horn said. "He called me, he's excited. He thinks he's ready to come back next year. I think the organization and the NBA is going to have to take a look at what he can bring. I'm going to work out with him, we're effective working together, he'll use that as a gauge."

New Jersey dropped six straight games to end the season at 26-56, five games worse than last season, which it ended with 11 straight defeats.

The league-worst Bulls (14-67) won for just the fourth time in 40 road games. They finish their season at Philadelphia on Wednesday.

The Nets were outrebounded, 45-35, and outscored at the line, 25-10. Doug Overton scored 17 points and handed out 11 assists. Van Horn added 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting.

"No disrepect to the Bulls," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "But this is a game we should have won. Somewhere down the line you have to look within yourself to find out what you want to do and what you want to accomplish. A lot of guys, in my opinion, are not playing to their potential, not as hard as they can play. To me, that means you're stealing (money) some guys were just coasting."

Chicago led 55-40 late in the second quarter on a jumper by rookie Marcus Fizer. It took a 55-44 advantage into the break.

The Nets got back in it with 18-6 fourth-quarter run. Harris scored 12 points during the surge.

New Jersey tied it, 94-94, on a basket by Harris with one minute to play, but Ron Artest scored and Fred Hoiberg made a pair from the line to make it 98-94. Fizer stole as inbounds pass with 16 seconds left and Guyton made two foul shots to cap the scoring.

The Bulls had six players in double figures and shot 47 percent (33-of-69) to snap a two-game slide. They have won two in a row on the road following a franchise-record 25-game road losing streak.

Artest scored 19 points and Fizer had 17 off the bench. Hoiberg added 15 and Elton Brand recorded 12, 12 rebounds and seven assists.
