Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- New arena, same Dallas Mavericks.

Michael Finley scored 34 points and Dirk Nowitzki exploded for 20 in the second half as the Mavericks won their opener at the American Airlines Center, 94-87 over the Detroit Pistons.

Coming off the best season in franchise history, Dallas is hoping to begin a new era of success in its new building, which is shared by the NHL's Dallas Stars. The Mavericks posted an 28-13 record at Reunion Arena last season and a change of surroundings did not change things.

Finley made 14-of-28 shots from the floor and scored 16 points in the first half to keep the Mavericks afloat. Nowitzki missed all five of his shots in the first half and scored just one point as Dallas trailed at halftime, 44-40.

"My shot just wasn't going in and I really wasn't aggressive enough," Nowitzki said. "I went out early at halftime and tried to get some more shots in and got really warmed up."

"Nowitzki seemed really tight in the first half but got his rhythm in the second half," Dallas coach Don Nelson added. "I had to rely on Mike, not only offensively but to do a tough job defensively. He rose to the occasion and did a marvelous job on both ends of the court and really won the game for us. He did what he was supposed to do as our leader in this game."

Nowitzki woke up in the second half, scoring nine points in the third quarter, including a 3-pointer that put Dallas ahead for good with 1:04 left. The shot sparked a 14-4 run that carried into the fourth quarter and put away the game.

Steve Nash had 14 points and 11 assists and Juwan Howard added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Mavericks. Shawn Bradley chipped in nine points and seven rebounds before fouling out.

Jerry Stackhouse provided most of Detroit's offense, scoring 27 points on 7-of-19 shooting. He added six assists and eight rebounds.

Dell Curry was the only other Piston in double figures with 12 points and Dana Barros added nine and seven rebounds. Ben Wallace picked up where he left off last season with 12 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Detroit shot just 38 percent (30-of-78) and committed 16 turnovers in its first game under coach Rick Carlisle.

"It's not about me, it's about winning," Carlisle said. "I thought we had a good defensive first half, then we succumbed to some shot-making. It was a tough night offensively. They are a team of shot-makers, but I thought overall the effort was pretty good."

Dallas made just 7-of-22 shots in the first quarter and Stackhouse scored 11 points to help the Pistons to a 25-17 lead.

Finley scored 12 points in the second quarter to keep the Mavs close and added nine in the third as they climbed back.

"I was just getting the ball in good position and I made the most of it," Finley said. "My teammates were screaming at me to take shots."

Finley gave the Mavs a 64-57 lead with a 3-pointer at 3:31, but Detroit scored seven straight points to tie it with 1:11 remaining. After Nowitzki's 3-pointer put Dallas ahead for good, Howard made a layup with nine seconds remaining for a 69-64 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Mikki Moore made the first shot of the final quarter for the Pistons, but Nowitzki scored the next six points consecutively before Finley nailed a 3-pointer for 78-66 lead with 8:41 left.

The Mavericks lost guard Greg Buckner in the first quarter to a sprained right ankle and already were without Adrian Griffin, who is sidelined with back spasms.

"It was a tough game without two of our better defenders," Finley said. "It took a total team effort out of all the guys. That's what it took for us to win out there tonight."
