Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- After looking like anyting but a contender for 3 1/2 quarters, the Milwaukee Bucks needed just 12 minutes to show why they may be the best team in the Eastern Conference.

Ray Allen scored 32 points, Glenn Robinson added 28 and Sam Cassell had 25 as the Bucks rallied from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit and dominated overtime in a 119-112 victory over the Utah Jazz.

Milwaukee entered the season with higher expectations than most teams but did not live up to them most of the way. The Bucks were outhustled and outplayed and trailed, 91-80, with 7:46 left in the fourth quarter before Robinson led the comeback.

Robinson scored 10 points during a 20-9 outburst and Cassell gave Milwaukee its first lead since the first quarter, 101-100, on an 18-foot jumper with seven seconds left.

Cassell stole an errant pass from Stockton and got it ahead to Robinson, who was fouled but made just 1-of-2 free throws.

Stockton made a lefthanded layup under the outstretched arm of newcomer Anthony Mason to tie it and Tim Thomas missed a wide-open 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

Allen scored six points in the extra session, Cassell added five and Robinson nailed a pair of jumpers as Milwaukee pulled away.

"Our guys believe they can win," Bucks coach George Karl said. "They think they are going to make shots at the end of the game and our question has always been are we going to make stops. Tonight, maybe they ran out of gas or maybe we got lucky. In the fourth quarter and the overtime, we defended a lot better."

The Bucks made all seven of their shots in overtime and both free throws while Utah was just 4-of-10 from the floor.

"They hit some big shots in the overtime, we just got too lazy," Utah forward Bryon Russell said.

"They are the kind of team that will win a lot of games like this," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "We just have stay in those games for the whole 48 minutes. If we do that, we don't have to worry about going into overtime."

Robinson and Allen each made 11-of-21 shots and Cassell 9-of-20 to go with 11 assists. Mason had 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting and seven rebounds in his Bucks' debut.

Milwaukee shot 51 percent (43-of-83) from the floor and drained 10-of-25 3-pointers led by Allen, who made 4-of-9.

The Jazz shot 53 percent (43-of-81) and held a 51-41 rebounding edge but scored just 28 points after the third quarter.

John Starks had 20 points and John Stockton added 18 and 14 assists. Karl Malone scored 15 points on 4-of-12 shooting and Donyell Marshall added 12.

Utah trailed, 33-32, in the second quarter when a jumper by Starks triggered a 16-4 run. Stockton netted seven points during the spurt and Starks capped it with a pair of free throws to make it 48-35 with 4 1/2 minutes left in the first half.

But the Bucks closed the second quarter with a 16-6 run led by Rafer Alston, who nailed two 3-pointers in the final 70 seconds to get Milwaukee within 54-51 at halftime.

Utah outscored the Bucks, 30-24, in the third quarter and took their largest lead of the second half, 91-80, on a pair of free throws by Malone with 7:46 left in regulation.
