Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- International star Dirk Nowitzki is starting to feel right at home in Philadelphia.

Nowitzki had 30 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a 99-92 victory that spoiled the home opener of the shorthanded Philadelphia 76ers.

A native of Germany, Nowitzki had a huge game in the First Union Center for the second straight season. Last December, he scored 36 points in a 112-94 victory here.

"It's a good shooting gym," Nowitzki said. "I like the baskets and I like the background. I don't know why, I just feel good in here."

In this one, the 7-footer was too quick for Derrick Coleman as he often used his dribble to go around the slower power forward. When Coleman backed off, Nowitzki drilled the outside shot, including three 3-pointers.

Nowitzki made 10-of-17 shots. He scored 13 points in the second quarter, when Dallas took the lead for good. He added nine more in the final period, helping to turn back a rally by the pesky 76ers.

"I just tried to be aggressive early on," Nowitzki said. "Everyone just told me to keep on shooting and you'll find your rhythm. Today, I was able to find it."

Steve Nash scored 22 points and Tim Hardaway added 17 for the Mavericks, who led by as many as 18 points as they improved to 2-0 for the second straight season.

Matt Harpring scored 21 points and Dikembe Mutombo added 19 and 16 rebounds for the Sixers, who again played without injured guards Allen Iverson, Aaron McKie and Eric Snow. Philadelphia, which won its first 10 games last season, fell to 0-2.

"We made a lot of progress but, when you have young guards and a new 3 man (Harpring), and not a lot of depth in the backcourt, it's tough," Sixers coach Larry Brown said.

"We feel very fortunate to have played the Sixers when they have the injuries," Mavs coach Don Nelson said. "There was no way we would have beaten them tonight had they had there injured players. We weren't as sharp enough to beat what would be a normal team. So, we got the luck of the draw."

Nowitzki benefited from a switch in the starting lineup by coach Don Nelson, who inserted Hardaway in the backcourt. That moved Michael Finley to the frontcourt and forced the 76ers to defend Nowitzki with Coleman.

"It was a matchup that was the best way I thought to approach this game," Nelson said. "I went with it and I thought it was very successful. It put me in charge of the matchups and, that what I wanted to do."

Nowitzki and Nash made 3-pointers in an 8-0 run that gave Dallas the lead for good at 41-34 with 7:48 remaining in the second quarter. Nowitzki, Hardaway and Nash each made 3-pointers as the Mavs widened the lead to 59-46 at halftime.

"Nowitzki is seven feet, can dribble, and can make plays," Hardaway said. "When you can to do that, it's going to make it harder for Derrick Coleman, Dikembe Mutombo and Matt Geiger to stick him. It's impossible. He can shoot the three, step back, go to the hole and make things happen. We got a great guy who can make some plays for us."

"The only thing that frustrated me tonight was that we wanted to control the tempo and get the ball to our big guys and allow them to win the game," Brown said. "They weren't even involved in the first half. All they were doing was running back on defense and playing matchups that were difficult for them."

Nash's 3-pointer gave Dallas its largest lead at 66-48 with just under 10 minutes left in the third period. Coleman and Mutombo helped Philadelphia get within seven points, but Hardaway scored the last five points of the period, rebuilding the advantage to 78-66.

A jumper by Vonteego Cummings cut the deficit to 85-79 midway through the fourth quarter, but Nowitzki banked in a 3-pointer, answered two free throws by Cummings with two of his own and hit a jumper off a headfake for a 92-81 lead with 3:27 to go.

Finley scored 15 points for the Mavs, who cooled off in the second half and finished at 44 percent (35-of-79). Dallas had just 10 turnovers.

Coleman collected 18 points and 11 boards for the Sixers, who shot 45 percent (34-of-75) but committed 19 turnovers, leading to 25 points for Dallas.
