Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- It was an all-around effort by Jalen Rose.

Rose starred for the second time this season, scoring all of his 24 points after halftime while clamping down on Tracy McGrady as the Indiana Pacers posted a 117-107 victory over the Orlando Magic.

McGrady (3-of-10) and fellow All-Star Grant Hill (4-of-12) both were held in check as the Pacers won their home opener by grabbing the lead late in the first quarter and holding the Magic at arms' length thereafter.

"We still had a couple of mental lapses defensively, but I thought it was a great team effort," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said. "Everybody contributed. Orlando is a very good team. I can see why they are picked to go to the NBA Finals."

Rose, who scored a career-high 43 points in a season-opening loss at New Jersey, made nine of 16 shots, including 1-of-4 from 3-point range, and added six assists, seven rebounds and three steals to lead Indiana's balanced attack.

"We have several guys that can score in double figures and I had to wait my turn and help win in the second half," Rose said. "I must be able to be a complete basketball player, and that means playing where I am supposed to play."

Nine players saw action for Thomas' squad and seven scored in double figures. Jermaine O'Neal had 17 points, Al Harrington contributed 16 and rookie Jamaal Tinsley added 10 and 10 assists.

The Pacers scored 39 points in the opening 12 minutes, led by eight at halftime and nine after three periods. Early in the fourth quarter, Travis Best drilled a 3-pointer that gave Indiana its biggest cushion at 92-79.

"Whenever we score over 100 points we should be able to win the game," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "Offense won't be a problem. Our two best players struggled and we still had 107, but we have to play defense."

Orlando, which fell to 1-1, twice fought within six points late in the game. A 20-foot jumper by Darrell Armstrong made it 109-103 with just over two minutes remaining.

But Tinsley responded with a 20-footer, Rose forced McGrady into a turnover and O'Neal's layup with 1:15 left all but sealed the outcome.

"It was just one of those nights," McGrady said. "It was hard to get going offensively and we didn't have a lot of defensive stops early. You can't give up 39 points in a quarter and expect to win."

Best had 10 points for the Pacers, who connected on 52 percent (42-of-81) of their shots while overcoming 15 turnovers. O'Neal and Austin Croshere had eight rebounds apiece, helping Indiana to a 42-39 advantage on the boards.

"I thought we played very well," Best said. "People thought that they could be the best of the East, and they still can be. We played them tough and we feel these first games are going to be very important over the long haul."

The Magic made seven 3-pointers and shot 46 percent (38-of-83) while committing 12 turnovers.

Armstrong led Orlando with 23 points, Troy Hudson had 19 and Pat Garrity 17. Hill was held to 13, although he had 15 rebounds and eight assists. McGrady netted just 11 points with six assists.

"I just feel a little bit out of sync," said Hill, who missed all but four games last season due to injury. "It was just one of those nights."

The teams combined to make 51-of-63 free throws.
