Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Jason Terry scored 14 of his 20 points in the second half and Nazr Mohammed had 13 points and 14 rebounds as the Atlanta Hawks won for the first time this season, 90-83, over the Miami Heat.

Terry made just two shots in the first 24 minutes and 5-of-15 overall but collected seven rebounds, four assists and four steals to help Atlanta snap a two-game slide.

"Anytime you get a win it's good for your confidence and your psyche," he said. "It was still a close ballgame, we won it and we can grow on that. Games like this and the two games we lost are learning experiences."

Mohammed, starting for injured center Theo Ratliff, made 5-of-8 shots from the floor and picked up the slack for scoring forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who made just 3-of-15 shots and fouled out with 17 points and eight rebounds.

"We knew we had to be aggressive because we are so little without him," Terry said of Atlanta's lack of size without Ratliff. "It made us do the little things like rebound and box out. The coaching staff prepared for a big, physical ballgame. You have to have some kind of physical effort out there."

The Hawks also got a lift from Hanno Mottola, who had 10 points and five rebounds. Dion Glover scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting off the bench.

"I'm a Shareef reliever," said Mottola, who made 3-of-4 shots. "I come in there when he needs a blow and I try to do the best I can. My role is to come in provide a spark. I just try to grab some rebounds and play some defense and if I get some points, that's fine."

Abdur-Rahim's struggle stemmed from his matchup with Alonzo Mourning, who had 23 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks for the Heat, but got very little help.

Forward Brian Grant endured a terrible game with four points and eight rebounds. He was scoreless until the fourth quarter.

The Hawks outmuscled the bigger, stronger Miami squad and had a 48-39 rebounding edge.

"It was a very physical game," Mohammed said. "When you have Brian Grant and Alonzo, two guys who like to bang and rebound, we're all out there trying to be physical. It's big, we needed the win for our confidence."

Miami trailed throughout the final three quarters but pulled within 73-70 with 6:14 to go. The Hawks led, 81-78, when Emanual Davis, who scored 11 points, nailed a 3-pointer to double the lead with 1:19 remaining.

The Heat failed to score on their next possession and Terry sank two free throws at the other end for an eight-point cushion.

Eddie Jones scored 17 points and former Hawk LaPhonso Ellis added 11 for Miami, which failed for the second straight game to notch its 500th franchise victory.

"We have to get beter as a team," Mourning said. "I think time will dictate how good we can get. Things can't get any worse, I feel, unless we have a rash of injuries."

Atlanta was clinging to a 56-54 lead midway through the third quarter when Terry scored six points during a 9-2 run to close the quarter.

The Hawks took their biggest lead, 71-60, on a layup by Mottola with 8:38 left. But the Heat almost immediately rallied.

After the teams traded baskets, Miami scored eight straight points highlighted by a three-point play by Mourning, who was fouled on a reverse dunk.

Eddie House, who scored eight points, sparked the run with a 3-pointer and closed it with a layup that made it 73-70.

"If you have come to making a run at the end, there should be a certain level of consistency," Mourning said. "To tell you the truth, there is a lot more I should be doing out there in order to end help the team win and get better."

"It's not one individual, we have to get out game back as team," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We've lost two games, we're a lot disjointed as a team right now."
