Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Greg Anthony was brought in to provide veteran leadership. He led the Chicago Bulls to their first win of the season.

Anthony scored 17 points and hit a crucial 3-pointer with 1:40 remaining as the Chicago Bulls surprised the New York Knicks, 84-79.

The Bulls won just 15 games last season and began rebuilding again in the offseason, acquiring teenage 7-footers Eddy Curry and Tyson Chandler on draft day. To help bring along their young players, the Bulls also acquired Anthony, an 11-year veteran.

Anthony's 3-pointer snapped a tie and gave the Bulls a 79-76 lead. Marcus Fizer had a steal and dunk to give Chicago a five-point edge with 1:22 left and New York got no closer than three points thereafter.

Chicago limited New York to 35 percent shooting (26-of-75). New York All-Star guard Allan Houston scored only five points on 2-of-11 from the field.

"I think we did a real good job on their 1-2 punch of (Latrell) Sprewell and Houston," Anthony said. "Defensively, guys stepped up and made a lot of plays and got a lot of help tonight. Our team defense was very good."

Ron Mercer scored 14 of his 17 points in the first half for the Bulls (1-2), who started 1-13 last season.

"We knew we were capable of winning this game coming in," Mercer said. "Down the stretch we played hard and that is something we had to to."

Sprewell scored 17 points and Clarence Weatherspoon and Shandon Anderson each had 12 for the Knicks (1-2), who lost their second straight game. New York has dropped two in a row to Chicago.

"We're not playing consistently, nor hard and smart," Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "I just don't know what it is. We have to make jump shots. No one is shooting particularly well, whether it's inside or not."

Chicago trailed 63-59 entering the fourth quarter and scored the next eight points to take a four-point lead with 8:42 remaining. There were two lead changes and three ties before Anthony's 3-pointer.

"It was nice to see the guys get rewarded with a win for their efforts," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "They played well last night over in Boston, and you can keep going to the well on that and if you don't get a win out of it, sometimes it is hard to bring the same effort back."

Curry scored four of his season-high 10 points during a 17-5 run midway through the first quarter that turned an 11-4 deficit into a five-point lead, Chicago's largest until late in the fourth quarter.

The Knicks regained the lead, 22-21, with less than one minute remaining in the first quarter and held it until the final period.

New York led 45-43, at halftime as Weatherspoon and Kurt Thomas each scored eight points.

Chandler, who has struggled more than Curry, scored a season-high three points.
