Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Karl Malone scored 19 of his 28 points in the second half as the Utah Jazz picked up their first victory of the season with a 91-74 triumph over the Seattle SuperSonics.

Malone made just 9-of-21 shots but repeatedly got to the foul line, where he made 10-of-13. He also snatched 11 rebounds and helped the Jazz avoid their first 0-3 start since the 1979-80 season, the franchise's first in Utah.

"I realize that the all-time record with the Jazz was 0-15 when they first came in the league," Malone said. "I knew all of that going into the game. Just to get one win is really important for us."

Utah held a 23-18 lead after one quarter and took control of the game in the second period. A 3-pointer by John Starks pushed the margin to double figures for the first time at 30-20 with 9:25 left.

Donyell Marshall had five points in a 10-2 spurt that closed the half, including a long 3-pointer with seven seconds to go that made it 49-32. Marshall scored 14 of his 23 points in the first half and finished with 13 rebounds.

The second half was more of the same for both teams. A short jumper by Malone and a driving layup by John Stockton gave the Jazz a 75-59 lead less than two minutes into the fourth quarter. The SuperSonics managed just 15 points in the final 12 minutes.

"It's a typical Utah Jazz-type game," said Seattle coach Nate McMillan. "They pound you. They're a very physical team on both ends of the floor and they just outworked us on the offensive glass."

Utah held a 45-29 edge on the boards. Marshall and rookie Andrei Kirilenko combined for 11 offensive boards.

"We did a good job because we were more active," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "In the last two games, the ball would hit two or three guys right in the hands and we just couldn't get a hold on it. Tonight, we got a little better handle on it."

Bryon Russell scored 11 points and Stockton handed out 14 assists for Utah, which has won six straight from Seattle. Stockton played despite a laceration on his finger suffered in Thursday's loss to the Lakers.

"He's a registered stud, I'll give him his papers now without a doubt," Malone said. "There are a lot of guys that would have taken four to six weeks off in his situation. We have a litle competition going and he looked at me and said, `You played, didn't you? You don't think I'm gonna play?'"

Desmond Mason scored 18 points and Gary Payton added 14 and nine assists for Seattle, which never got closer than eight points in the second half. Rashard Lewis added 13 and 10 rebounds.

Seattle shot 39 percent (28-of-72) and committed 20 turnovers, leading to 26 points by Utah.
