Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks spoiled Lorenzen Wright's birthday bash.

Wright's career highs of 33 points and 26 rebounds were wasted as the Mavericks overcame the absence of Dirk Nowitzki and defeated the winless Memphis Grizzlies, 94-85.

A Memphis native, Wright was acquired in a trade with Atlanta during the offseason and addressed the fans of the NBA's newest city prior to Thursday night's home opener.

After a 90-80 loss to Detroit, Wright said he never wanted to win a game more than that one. The 6-11 center looked like he wanted to win this one pretty bad as well.

"I hate to lose," Wright said. "I always hate to lose."

Playing on his 26th birthday, Wright dominated the paint on both ends. He made 10-of-21 shots and 13-of-17 free throws. He also had nine offensive rebounds, a steal and a block, but it still wasn't enough to topple the Mavs.

"He had a huge day," Dallas forward Juwan Howard said. "It was a heck of a birthday present, but I'm pretty sure he'd rather have a victory instead of all the points and rebounds."

"It really doesn't matter to me what my stats were," Wright said. "It's not about my birthday; it's about wins. Winning is the only thing I think about."

Wright's rebounds also broke the franchise record of 22 set by Shareef Abdur-Rahim on two occasions. Wright had 25 rebounds vs. Sacramento on March 11, 1999, when he was the Los Angeles Clippers.

"I'm always thinking rebounds first and other things come with the rebounds -- going hard to the basket, getting fouled and tip-ins," Wright said. "I just try to get as many as I can. I try to get 20 rebounds every time I step on the court."

"He had a huge night," Mavs guard Tim Hardaway said. "Anytime you get 33 and 26, you've had a huge night. Sometimes it will be like that, but he's going home with an `L.'"

Howard picked up the slack for Nowitzki, who was sidelined with a sprained ankle. He scored 36 points on 16-of-23 shooting as he abused second-year forward Stromile Swift.

"That's what it's about when a teammate goes out that you depend on for so much scoring and rebounding," Howard said. "We knew we were short going in, so everybody had to step up."

Michael Finley scored 24 points and Hardaway added 13 for the Mavs, who improved to 20-4 all-time against the Grizzlies.

Jason Williams scored 21 points but committed a key turnover down the stretch for Memphis (0-3), one of three winless teams in the NBA. The others are Philadelphia and the Clippers.

"We're improving but not enough," Wright said. "We need to learn how to take the lead late in the game and hold it. I think once we learn how to do that, it's all over."

That was what the Mavericks did. They grabbed the lead for good late in the third quarter and took a 72-66 advantage into the final period.

Dallas allowed Memphis to get closer just twice. Six straight points by Wright cut the deficit to 83-78 with 5:48 to go, but Steve Nash made a lefthanded layup and Howard had a pair of baskets around a jumper by Williams, rebuilding the margin to 89-80 with 3:18 left.

"I was worried; we couldn't knock them out," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "I thought we had them several times but could not make the knockout shot."

Wright made a layup and and Williams hit a transition jumper to get it back to five points. But Williams threw away a pass that Finley turned into a dunk at the other end for a 91-84 lead with 2:04 remaining.

Danny Manning started for Nowitzki and grabbed 11 rebounds. The Mavs shot 47 percent (37-of-78) and held the Grizzlies to just 34 percent (26-of-76).

Memphis left Swift alone on Howard and paid the price. Howard scored 16 points in the first quarter and 10 more in the second as Dallas opened a 50-43 halftime lead.

"We feature a lot of players and tonight we featured Juwan," Hardaway said. "They played him straight up and he made them pay."
