Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- If the Los Angeles Clippers needed Lamar Odom, it was not evident against the Atlanta Hawks.

For the second time in eight months, Odom was suspended five games for violating the NBA's anti-drug policy, but the Clippers didn't feel his absence as they coasted to a 109-86 win.

Odom, who averaged 17.2 points in 76 games last season, is averaging 14.0 points through the first three in 2001-02 but is shooting just under 31 percent (.308) from the floor.

For the second straight game, Quentin Richardson came off the bench to lead the Clippers in scoring, totaling 20 points on 7-of-17 shooting. He poured in 26 in Saturday's overtime loss to the Golden State Warriors.

Five other Clippers scored in double figures, including Odom's replacement in the starting lineup, Corey Maggette, who had 16 points on 4-of-7 shooting.

Maggette, making just his 10th start in two-plus seasons, had 14 points in the first half as the Clippers jumped to a 55-45 lead at the break.

"I just want to help the team out," he said. "As you can see when I get that opportunity, I do what I have to do. Too bad it was in the circumstances with Lamar. Right now, we've just got to keep our heads up and hopefully Lamar can put everything back together and be back with the team."

"We intend to just continue to win games," Richardson added. "Someone will step in and fill the void. I think we've definitely learned a lot from last year."

Atlanta had its best chance to get back in the game when it cut the deficit to 59-53 with 9:17 remaining in the third. But on the Hawks' next poessession, Shareef Abdur-Rahim's shot was blocked by Michael Olowokandi, setting off a Clippers' surge.

Los Angeles, which was celebrating coach Alvin Gentry's 47th birthday, took control in the third quarter with a 12-4 run that extended its lead to 71-57 with 2:48 remaining before the fourth. Elton Brand capped the burst with a thunderous two-handed dunk.

"I thought everbody played well," Gentry said. "I thought Keyon (Dooling) was really good. I thought Corey really gave us a spark. We had much better ball movement than we've had in the past."

Brand had 13 points and 10 rebounds, but his biggest contribution was passing out of double-teams to open teammates. He had five assists as the Clippers shot 45 percent (37-of-82).

"This win was important," Brand said. "I think we came out and really played with a sense of urgency tonight. We did what we had to do and that is to win.

"Atlanta had (Jason) Terry go down today and that set them back a little. But we were set back a little with Lamar missing."

The Clippers continued to roll in the fourth quarter, making several athletic plays to extend their biggest lead to a 105-80 with 3:25 remaining.

Los Angeles also played well on the defensive end, blocking 15 shots and holding Atlanta to 37 percent shooting (34-of-92).

Nazr Mohammed paced the Hawks with a career-high 30 points and 11 rebounds.

Atlanta, which placed starting center Theo Ratlif on the injured list before the game with a strained right hip flexor and a slight groin pull, lost two of its key players during the contest.

Terry left the game midway through the first quarter with a strained left hamstring and reserve forward Toni Kukoc suffered a strained right quadraceps late in the third.

"It's going to happen to teams, but you just have to bind together and not feel sorry for yourself," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "I don't think we responded with the urgency you have to."

Los Angeles has won three straight home games against Atlanta, suffering its last loss here on February 27, 1999.
