(ADDING INFORMATION, QUOTES)

MINNESOTA 104, NEW YORK 94 --------------------------

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The New York Knicks may be having trouble with zone defenses, but Wally Szczerbiak is not.

Szczerbiak, a Long Island native, scored 28 of his career-high 35 points in the first half as the Minnesota Timberwolves remained unbeaten with a 104-94 victory over the Knicks.

Kevin Garnett collected 19 points and 13 rebounds and Terrell Brandon added 12 points and 12 assists for Minnesota, which is off to the best start in team history at 4-0.

"Wally was great tonight," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said. "He took good shots and worked hard. KG had a solid game, rebound-wise. Terrell had a good overall floor game. Overall, it's a good win."

Szczerbiak's 25 points in the first half matched his previous career high and fell two points short of the team record for points in a half, set by Tony Campbell on February 2, 1990 against Boston.

"I was getting good looks tonight and guys were looking for me," Szczerbiak said. "I really haven't been getting the looks this season. Tonight, I was relaxed and let it come to me. I've played vs. New York in the past. New York is where I grew up, but it's just another game on the schedule."

Minnesota had no problem with New York's defense, making 7-of-11 shots from beyond the arc and registering 30 assists to 10 turnovers.

"Thirty assists to 10 turnovers was the telling stat," Saunders said. "It shows we were sharing the ball and not turning it over."

New York is headed in the opposite direction with three straight losses. It has struggled against zone defenses employed by Charlotte, Chicago and Minnesota during the slide.

"Absolutely, their zone bothered us," Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We got good shots. Their length bothered us on the inside, but we didn't finish around the basket."

Minnesota had a 60-59 lead in the third quarter before stretching it to 82-63 with 3:10 left on a 22-4 run that forced Van Gundy to turn to his bench. Brandon had eight points during the spurt.

The Knicks closed within 88-81 with 8:40 left on a 3-pointer by Allan Houston. Szczerbiak responded with a long 3-pointer and the Knicks never seriously threatened thereafter.

"He was being very aggressive," Houston said of Szczerbiak. "A guy like that, if you let him get off early and get confident like that, he's going to be dangerous."

Houston led New York with 17 points and Latrell Sprewell added 14. Charlie Ward chipped in 12 points and 12 rebounds, but New York fell to 18-6 all-time against the Timberwolves.

The Knicks failed to capitalize at the foul line, going just 20-of-34 (59 percent). Sprewell was 4-of-10. 2:41AM ET
