Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Doug Christie and Mike Bibby each scored 20 points and contained Vince Carter as the Sacramento Kings returned from a four-game road trip and posted a 95-86 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Christie connected on 8-of-11 shots from the floor while Bibby knocked down 10-of-16 to offset a sub-par night by Peja Stojakovic, who missed 10-of-12 shots.

Vlade Divac recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds and Scot Pollard swiped 12 boards as Sacramento held a 45-36 advantage on the glass. The Kings also outscored the Raptors in the paint, 54-36.

"We talked about playing defense a certain way, and we didn't communicate well enough," Toronto coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We judt did not play the way we are capable of playing, and that put us in too big of a hole. We tried to get it back too quick and when you try to get it back too quick, then your decision-making goes by the wayside."

The Kings went 2-2 on their trip and improved to 3-0 at Arco Arena, where they were 33-8 last season to tie San Antonio for the best home mark in the NBA.

"I thought it was a really good win on our part," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "It's a good team we played. We took control early in the game. The second half, we struggled a little bit, but I was overall pleased with the way our guys approached this game."

Carter scored 23 points and grabbed six rebounds, but the All-Star was scoreless in the fourth quarter, when he played just five minutes.

"He wasn't playing well and we have a game tomorrow night and those kids (on the bench) worked hard. They got the game back to where it was," Wilkens said of Carter. "If Vince was playing really swell and shooting the ball well, I would've brought him back in."

Keon Clark again gave the Raptors a boost off the bench with 13 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots in 23 minutes. But Toronto's starting frontcourt of Morris Peterson, Antonio Davis and Hakeem Olajuwon combined for just 13 rebounds.

"One team is going to win and one team is going to lose. We were just on the short end of the stick tonight," Clark said. "No finger-pointing, no bad news or things of that nature, we just have to come out stronger when we play our next game. There are 82 games in the season."

The Raptors shot 42 percent (34-for-81) and dropped to 1-2 on a season-high six-game road trip.

Bibby and Christie got off to a fast start, combining to make 9-of-10 shots in the first period, when the Kings raced to a 31-22 lead.

Bibby capped a 10-3 burst with a 22-footer to stretch Sacramento's lead to 56-40 with 1:32 left before halftime. The Kings shot 53 percent (26-for-49) in the first half and took a 59-44 advantage into the locker room.

Bibby capped a fast break with a running jumper to give Sacramento its biggest lead, 67-47, with 9:06 to go in the third quarter. Carter scored five points during a 14-1 run that Clark capped with a three-point play to cut the deficit to 68-61 with 2:59 to go in the third.

But Toronto got no closer as Divac answered with a free throw 61 seconds later.

"We played good basketball the first three quarters," Divac said. "The fourth quarter, we let them come close, but Mike (Bibby) did a great job and Doug Christie played good defense on Vince tonight."
