Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Behind their dynamic duo of Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady, the Orlando Magic extended their winning streak against the Denver Nuggets to nine games with a 101-82 triumph.

Hill had 23 points and 11 rebounds and McGrady added 20 and seven as the Magic denied Denver a fourth consecutive victory. The Nuggets, whose 82 points were a season low, have not defeated the Magic since March 12, 1996.

"I really needed that tonight," Hill said. "It was a good mental step. I was doing things that I haven't been doing -- post moves -- and my shot was falling."

McGrady scored eight points during a 17-4 run late in the third quarter that give the Magic a 76-60 lead. Orlando started the final period with a 12-point cushion and maintained a double-digit lead thereafter.

"As Doc (Orlando coach Doc Rivers) said, we were flirting with disaster tonight," Hill said. "We really couldn't put it away in the first or second quarter, but in the third and fourth, we put it together and did."

Orlando won its second straight game to improve to 2-2 on a five-game road trip. They made 21-of-25 free throws.

"We're trying to prove something," McGrady said. "Our exectations are high. Once this team gels and comes together, we're going to be something. Every time guys took shots, we were in their faces. Nothing was easy. What helped us is that we were running. They didn't want to run with us."

Ryan Bowen scored a career-high 14 points to lead Denver. Nick Van Exel, the NBA's fourth-leading scorer at 27 points per game, had just 13 on 6-of-19 shooting.

"Ryan Bowen was terrific tonight," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "But we can't have him be the leading scorer."

The Nuggets shot under 33 percent (31-of-95) and was 5-of-18 from 3-point range. It was Denver's worst game from the floor since shooting 31.7 percent at Phoenix on February 22, 2000 and its worst performance ever at the Pepsi Center.

"You're going to have nights when you're not going to shoot well, and this was one of them," Issel said. "I felt that once we stopped shooting, we stopped playing. We had no chance to win this game the way we were shooting, but we still need to play hard."

"I think what we did in the second half shows what we can do as a team," Hill said. "I really think we can play at that level. We were playing well, especially on defense. After last night, winning on the last shot (at Phoenix), the second one is great."
