Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- The NBA's best defense was not at its best, but Jerry Stackhouse and Damon Jones were good enough on offense.

Stackhouse scored 18 points and Jones added 16 as the Detroit Pistons continued their surprising start with a 104-98 victory over the Indiana Pacers, who dropped their fourth straight game.

Stackhouse, one of the best offensive weapons in the NBA, was 5-of-12 from the floor. Jones made 7-of-13 shots off the bench after playing only just two minutes in Thursday's victory over Dallas.

That was his only action of the season until he entered midway through the second period with the assignment of guarding rookie point guard Jamaal Tinsley.

Jones was a journeyman guard who had played with five teams and signed with the Houston Rockets before they waived him October 25. The Pistons claimed him four days later and put him on the injured list before activating him Thursday.

"It was great," he said. "I was finally able to get an opportunity to get into the game and find a rhythm. I don't think I did anything that Chucky (Atkins) and Dana (Barros) weren't doing.

"When you have been on seven or eight teams you tend to lose a little respect, so I was able to get some looks that other guys might not get."

The Pistons (6-2) are off to their best start since 1996-97, when they opened 11-2.

Through their first seven games, the Pistons had allowed an average of 86 points per game. On Saturday, they fell behind 30-24 after one quarter.

But the Detroit stepped up the defense in the second and third quarters, outscoring Indiana, 48-37.

"There is a lot to be said for winning ugly," Detroit coach Rick Carlisle said. "That's what we had to do tonight. Isiah (Pacers coach Isiah Thomas) was trying to size us down and that really made it tough for us.

"Damon Jones did a great job filling in. It was a move we had to make for size because Tinsley was just going wild."

Tinsley had 28 points and 13 rebounds in 44 minutes and kept the Pacers in it in the fourth quarter.

"I'm just trying to get better with every game but the main thing is to win," Tinsley said. "That's what I am all about. I had 28 tonight but we didn't win so it really doesn't matter.

"I am getting playing time. When you get the minutes you can put up some pretty good numbers. I am getting comfortable with the NBA game. I think I can get even better."

Indiana closed the gap to 82-78 with 7:20 left before Jon Barry nailed an open 3-pointer from the top of the key and Stackhouse made an easy layup to push the lead to 87-78.

Jones, who scored eight points in the final period, nailed a 3-pointer with 5:06 to play that gave the Pistons a 92-82 lead.

Tinsley did not show any signs of tiring, making a 3-pointer and layup that got Indiana close again at 92-87 with less than four minutes to play.

"Everybody figured in it tonight," Stackhouse said. "Some nights will have somebody step up and have a huge game but it is nice when you get a lot of people contributing."

"The test for us was winning against a quality team and then coming back and winning against another quality team. Everybody was saying we were beating the lower-echelon team but these were two quality teams we beat."

Indiana, which lost in double overtime to Minnesota on Friday, was without forward Jermaine O'Neal (back) and reserve guard Travis Best, who was placed on the injured list with a strained right hamstring.

"I thought it was a competitiive game," Thomas said. "We were very shorthanded but I was proud with the way the guys came out. After what we went through last night and to come out and give this type of effort, I am proud of them."
