Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks were trying to rebound from their worst loss of the season and wound up suffering their worst defeat in more than four years.

Steve Francis had a season-high 33 points and nine rebounds and Cuttino Mobley scored 16 of his 20 points in an overwhelming third quarter as the Houston Rockets snapped a three-game losing streak with a 124-87 rout of the Mavericks.

Dallas was handed a 26-point loss in Detroit on Thursday and was within a basket early in the third quarter Saturday before the roof caved in.

Houston closed the third quarter on a 41-16 run, making 15-of-20 shots, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Mobley nailed a pair of 3-pointers during the outburst, as did Walt Williams, who scored 10 of his season-high 21 points in the quarter.

Kevin Willis had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Rockets, who scored more than 120 points in a regulation game for the first time since March 28, 2000 against Golden State.

"This was a big win because we wanna be in the hunt and this is going to be a very competitive year," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "Luck is a part of it, but you have to beat the teams that are going to be in the playoffs."

Dallas lost the final two games of its three-game road trip by a combined 63 points and suffered its worst loss since November 17, 1997 at Portland.

"It was a long night for us," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "They did to us what they've been able to a lot of other teams on occasion. I am concerned, but Houston is simply a tough matchup for us."

Francis and Mobley combined to make 20-of-27 shots, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc, and 10-of-12 free throws.

Steve Nash scored 19 of his 21 points in the first half and Juwan Howard and Dirk Nowitzki added 13 points apiece for the Mavs, who shot 44 percent (37-of-84) and were outrebounded, 50-29.

"It's not fun," Nash said. "When you're in a stretch like this and on a night like this its hard to find something to build on. I can't understand why we are playing like this and we have to figure things out. We have to pride ourselves more on defense."

Houston seized control midway through the first quarter, going on a 12-2 run to take a 26-16 lead. Francis scored six points during the run and Williams capped it with a 3-pointer with 4:10 remaining.

The Rockets carried the 10-point lead into the second and had a 50-38 advantage with 5:43 left the quarter before Dallas closed the half on 14-6 run. Nash nailed a pair of 3-pointers and a jumper in the burst to bring the Mavs within 56-52 at halftime.

"At halftime we knew we could win the game," Nowitzki said. "Houston stepped it up in the second half and we didn't."

Greg Buckner halved the deficit on a layup 41 second into the third quarter, but Francis answered with consecutive layups to spark a 15-4 run.

Mobley sank two jumpers and a 3-pointer and was on the receiving end of an alley-oop from Francis as the Rockets went ahead by double digits for good.

"In the sceond quarter we got lackadaisical, but we got the defense going in the third and then for the offense, it seemed like the dam broke," Tomjanovich said.

"When guys are hitting their shots it is so much easier for Steve and myself," Mobley said. "We just moved the ball around and we took over after the first quarter."

Houston buried Dallas with a 12-0 run highlighted by five points each from Williams and Mobley. The run began with a layup by Kenny Thomas that gave the Rockets a 78-66 lead and ended on a pair of free throws by Mobley that made it 90-66 with 2:29 left.

The Rockets shot 58 percent (46-of-80) and hit 7-of-20 3-pointers. They outscored Dallas 56-42 in the paint and scored 23 points on the fast break.

"That was great, to get out on the break and run," Williams said. "The way we pushed the ball really opened up the pace."

"I've thought all along we're a good offensive team," Tomjanovich said. "But our shooting has been suffering. "We got it going tonight. We did a tremendous job of spacing the floor, moving the ball and then knocking down the shots."
