Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd is getting used to being in clutch situations on the New Jersey Nets' current road trip.

Kidd recorded his first triple-double as a Net and Keith Van Horn scored 34 points to lift New Jersey to a 95-90 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, who played with Lamar Odom for the first time in nine games.

Kidd finished with 16 points, 11 assists and 12 boards for his 39th career triple-double. He made all 10 free throws, including eight in the final 37 seconds, as the Nets held off a late rally.

"I think Jason is the best point guard in the NBA," Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry said. "Because of Kidd, Van Horn has been able to blossom. He just makes everyone better."

It was Kidd who came up with clutch shots earlier in the road trip. He nailed a 3-pointer that forced overtime in a loss at Denver on Monday and sent New Jersey's game with Utah on Wednesday into an extra session with another 3-pointer.

"Confidence has been the key for me and my teammates," Kidd said. "We've been in a lot of tough situations and the confidence has got us through."

New Jersey scored eight straight points to take the lead for good at 79-73 with 6:16 to play. Van Horn had three points in the run that saw Los Angeles go scoreless for more than five minutes.

The Clippers closed within three points three times in the final 30 seconds but Kidd answered with a pair of free throws on each occasion.

"I want the ball down the stretch like any other player," Kidd said. "That's money time and I wanted it in my hands."

Elton Brand collected 23 points and 16 rebounds to lead Los Angeles. Lamar Odom came off the bench in his first game since being suspended for violating the league's substance abuse policy and scored seven points on 3-of-10 shooting.

"It was his first time back," Brand said. "We're going to get him in the groove. We're going to implement him in our offense again, and we should be all right."

Odom entered the game with just under three minutes left in the first quarter and was cheered when his name was announced. He made his first three shots but missed his final seven.

"I just tried to stay focused on the game and do whatever it took to help my team win," Odom said. "But I didn't contribute that much tonight."

Van Horn made back-to-back 3-pointers that gave New Jersey a 60-45 lead with 8:43 left in the third quarter. Brand helped bring Los Angeles back with eight points as the Clippers pulled within 71-66 at the end of the third quarter.

The Clippers scored the first seven points of the fourth for a 73-71 lead on Quentin Richardson's basket with just under 10 minutes left. That was their last basket until Richardson scored to get Los Angeles within 79-75 with 5:47 to play.

Richardson scored 20 points off the bench and Jeff McInnis added 12 on 4-of-15 shooting. The Clippers made just 2-of-17 from beyond the arc.

Van Horn scored 15 points in the first quarter and added 11 in the third, making 12-of-21 shots. Lucious Harris scored 19 points off the bench and Kenyon Martin added 16.

"I had a good feeling and Jason did a good job getting me the ball in the post tonight," Van Horn said. "It got my game really going all around."

The Nets improved to 6-2 in back-to-back games this season.
