Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Rasheed Wallace scored 12 of his season-high 30 points in the fourth quarter, including a clutch 3-pointer with 15 seconds left, as the Portland Trail Blazers posted a 97-90 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Wallace made 10-of-16 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers in the final period, when he rescued his team from a third straight loss. He scored four points during a 9-0 run as Portland took an 82-72 lead with seven minutes to play.

"Anytime he plays like that, we're pretty good," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "His jump shot was falling. Anytime his jump shot is falling, it makes the post game a little easier."

Denver pulled within three with 30 seconds left, but Nick Van Exel missed a tough layup and Wallace responded with his ninth 3-pointer of the season to seal the win.

"Huge, just huge," Portland's Derek Anderson said of Wallace's clutch shot. "That's the shot he has to take and he's going to make it most of the time. We depend on him and he stepped up."

Ruben Patterson scored 15 points, Anderson added 12 and Dale Davis 11 for the Blazers. Damon Stoudamire returned after missing five games with tendinitis in his right knee and had 10 points and nine assists.

"His game was very good, he didn't force anything," Cheeks said of Stoudamire. "I want him to play to perfect, but I know he's not going to play perfect. Tonight, he took command of the team."

Van Exel scored 29 points and Raef LaFrentz had 15, nine rebounds and five blocks for the Nuggets, who made 8-of-19 3-pointers. LaFrentz was 5-of-8 from the arc.

"We played awfully well and we are playing awfully hard," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "We are executing our defenseive game plan and if we keep playing like that, good things are probably going to happen."

Avery Johnson had 14 points and 12 assists and George McCloud collected 11 points and 11 rebounds for Denver.

Denver, which scored just 68 points in a 21-point loss to the Lakers on Wednesday, took a 19-12 lead in the first quarter as Van Exel scored six points during a 10-1 run.

But Portland scored 14 of the quarter's final 18 points and took a 26-23 lead. Wallace scored four points during the burst and Stoudmaire scored the final seven.

"He's at Grade A only after one game," Anderson said of Stoudamire. "We can't ask for much more than what Damon did."

The Nuggets charged back early in the second with 15-2 run, turning a five-point deficit into a 40-32 advantage with 5:07 left. Johnson started the run with back-to-back baskets and McCloud capped it with a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer.

LaFrentz opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer to give Denver a 52-45 lead, but the Blazers scored five straight points and the teams exchanged baskets twice before Patterson tied it with 6:14 remaining.

Anderson gave Portland the lead for good, 60-58, on a jumper from the left sideline with 5:37 left.

"For the final three minutes we fought back and forth, but they ended up the hitting the big shots," LaFrentz said. They all hurt but we put forth good effort and played hard. In the end we fell short."

Portland shot just 44 percent (34-of-77) from the floor and 65 percent (24-of-37) from the line, but held a 45-35 rebounding edge and committed a season-low six turnovers.

"We took care of the ball and that's a big factor," Cheeks said.

The Blazers have won 11 of their last 12 home meetings with the Nuggets and 20 of the last 22.
