Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Peja Stojakovic was on a roll and Chris Webber was enjoying it.

Stojakovic scored 32 points, including a pair of key late jumpers, as the Sacramento Kings posted a 110-98 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

Sacramento saw a 20-point lead cut to four before Mike Bibby scored for a 93-87 lead with 3:25 to go. After the Mavericks failed to answer, Stojakovic sank a 21-foot jumper over Steve Nash for an eight-point cushion with 2:40 to go as the injured Webber whooped it up on the bench.

"As years and games go by you gain more confidence and I especially feel a responsibility to actually take more shots," Stojakovic said.

Michael Finley drilled a 3-pointer 17 seconds later to get Dallas within 95-90, but Stojakovic countered with a fadeaway jumper from the top of the key with Nash draped all over him. The basket forced the Mavericks to use a timeout, and Webber greeted Stojakovic with an emphatic chest bump.

"I was just having a good time," Webber said. "They (Dallas) had some great fans here who were really getting on us. I'm not playing so I wanted to feel a part of it. I wanted to get boos, so when Peja and other guys had the ball, I told the fans that I thought they were going to make the shot. I'm glad they made me look good and made the shots. It was fun."

Stojakovic added a fadeaway jumper with 55 seconds left that prompted Webber to pump his right arm in a windmill fashion as the Kings' bench erupted.

"It was just a terrific win," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "I'm just really proud of our guys for the way they approached the game. The second half, you know that team is going to make a run at you. We sustained it and made our little run at the end of the game."

Hedo Turkoglu finished with 17 points and Bobby Jackson added 16, but the story was Stojakovic, who made 13-of-19 shots and scored 17 of his points in the first quarter.

"I did it in the first quarter, then Bobby and Hedo came off the bench and did a great job, shooting the ball well," Stojakovic said. "They just continued to play well."

Nowitzki scored 29 points and Finley had 21 for the Mavericks, who had a four-game winning streak stopped.

"Peja played great tonight and especially at the end of the game when they needed him," Nowitzki said. "He was quiet in the second and third quarters, but when they needed him, he was there. He made tough shots. When he makes those types of shots it's tough to beat them."

Sacramento established control by closing the first half with a 13-2 spurt for a 59-42 lead. Jackson had nine points in the spurt.

A basket by Stojakovic gave the Kings their largest lead at 68-48 with 7 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter. Dallas rallied with a 13-2 run, including the final five points from Tim Hardaway, to get within 70-61 with 3:48 left in the quarter.

The Mavericks continued their push in the fourth quarter, but were stymied by the late shooting of Stojakovic.

"We found a way to get behind by 17 points in the first half and you are not going to come back," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "You get lucky once and a while against a young team, but this was a veteran team. I just wish we could have given them a little bit more. I think we are better than we played tonight."

Hardaway scored 16 points and Juwan Howard added 12 points and nine boards but Dallas was outrebounded, 47-39.
