Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Hakeem Olajuwon showed that he still has a move or two left in him.

Olajuwon's jumper with 1.8 seconds to play capped a wild finish and gave the Toronto Raptors their fourth straight victory, 104-103 over the Atlanta Hawks.

"That's why he's one of the greatest," teammate Vince Carter said. "He proved it tonight. He can take big shots and make them."

The 38-year-old center's winning shot marked the sixth lead change of the final two minutes and came after Nazr Mohammed had given the Hawks the lead with two free throws with 3.9 seconds to go.

Alvin Williams threw a bullet inbounds pass from half-court to Olajuwon on the low left block. Olajuwon spun toward the baseline and lofted one of his patented fadeaway jumpers over Mohammed, silencing the crowd of 18,628 at Philips Arena.

"In the NBA, three seconds is a long time," Olajuwon said. "The most important thing is to get a good shot. When I cut to the basket, I was in my position. I was in very good position. I'm so glad I put the ball right in."

"It hurts," Mohammed said. "That was a tough shot but one of the shots he makes."

Hawks guard Dion Glover was defending Carter and surprised the All-Star guard did not get the ball.

"I didn't think it was going to go to Dream, I thought it was going to go to Vince," Glover said. "It surprised me and I know it surprised Nazr. He's a great player, a top-50 and a Hall-of-Famer. He stepped up."

Glover had a strong second half en route to a season-high 25 points. But his 20-footer at the horn was contested and well off, allowing Toronto to escape with its club record-tying fifth straight road win.

"I was just trying to draw a foul, trying to make a foul," said Glover. "The refs didn't call it, that's their judgement."

Carter scored 19 points and Olajuwon added a season-high 16 for the Raptors, who had seven players in double figures. They last won five straight road games from April 17-23, 1999.

"A win is a win. We'll take it however it comes," Carter said. "In the record books, it's not going to say it's a close one. It's just going to say that we won. That's all that matters right now. We're just happy to get out of here and get ready for our game tomorrow."

A drive by Williams gave Toronto a 98-94 lead with 2:52 to go, but Shareef Abdur-Rahim hit a 3-pointer and Mohammed scored inside to give Atlanta the lead with two minutes left.

Carter soared above everyone for a tip-in with 1:09 to play and Abdur-Rahim answered with two free throws. Olajuwon made a pair from the line with 23 seconds remaining and the Raptors looked good when the high-flying Carter forced a jump ball with Abdur-Rahim with nine seconds left.

But the 6-10 Abdur-Rahim beat the 6-6 Carter to the tip and Mohammed was fouled tipping in Glover's miss with 3.9 seconds to go. However, officials ruled he was fouled before the tip and he had to settle for the go-ahead free throws.

"I had two taps at the ball," Mohammed said. "I thought it was good, I was positive it was good. But they blew the whistle and gave me free throws instead. It was the most emotional game I've had since I've been here, with it being so close."

Reserves Keon Clark and Dell Curry scored 14 and 11 points, respectively, for Toronto, which shot 50 percent (45-of-90) from the field and made 9-of-12 free throws. Carter and Clark had 10 rebounds each.

Abdur-Rahim scored 22 points and Mohammed added 12 and 12 boards for Atlanta, which shot 46 percent (37-of-80) and made 23-of-31 from the line. Toni Kukoc scored 16 points off the bench.

Carter and Clark scored 10 points apiece in the first half, when the Raptors led by 11 points before settling for a 50-42 bulge at halftime. Toronto took an 80-72 lead into the final period but Glover's jumper gave Atlanta an 84-83 lead with 8:21 to go.
