Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- After moving above .500 for the first time in more than five years, the Los Angeles Clippers wasted no time continuing their climb.

Lamar Odom and Corey Maggette triggered a quick start and Quentin Richardson scored 23 points as the Clippers snapped a seven-game home losing streak to the Seattle SuperSonics, 114-94.

The Clippers (12-10) never trailed and led by as many as 29 points. They established season highs for points in a half (70) and game as they looked as sharp as they have all season.

"We played as well as we could possibly play," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "We did such a great job defensively."

Monday's win over Orlando moved Los Angeles above .500 for the first time since it was 6-5 on November 21, 1996. The Clippers are two games above break-even for the first time since they were 6-4 on November 19, 1995, giving them some badly needed confidence.

"It's back," Odom said. "We're driving, dishing and taking shots when we're supposed to. We're playing team basketball and defending the ball really well."

Odom had 15 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in a superb all-around game. Maggette scored all 17 of his points in the first half, when the Clippers raced to a 70-45 lead.

Jeff McInnis scored 19 points and Elton Brand added 18 and 10 rebounds for the Clippers, who shot 54 percent (46-of-85) from the field and held a 42-32 rebounding advantage.

Seattle has gotten very comfortable in Los Angeles, going 8-1 in the Staples Center since it opened in 1999. That included Tuesday's win over the defending NBA champion Lakers, but the Clippers beat the SuperSonics at home for the first time since January 23, 1997.

"It was just a bad effort. There is no excuse for that kind of effort," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said. "The commitment on defense was just not there. They scored on us at will. It was not just one particular guy. Everybody was scoring."

Odom opened with a 3-pointer and his layup and Maggette's dunk extended the lead to 21-7 with 4:52 left in the first quarter. They scored nine points each in the opening period, which ended with the Clippers holding a 33-21 lead.

"It's easy to let down after beating the Lakers on their home court," Brand said. "I'm sure their coach really harped on them not to let down."

It was more of the same in the second quarter, when Richardson scored 13 points. Seattle still was within 51-38 after a pair of free throws by Brent Barry with 5 1/2 minutes left before Maggette scored six straight points and McInnis added four to push the advantage to 61-38 with 2:20 to go.

Richardson closed the half with a 3-pointer for a 70-45 lead.

"They are playing some great basketball," said Barry, a former Clipper. "Quentin Richardson is really making a bid for that Sixth Man (award). He's playing great basketball off the bench for them. They've got a good thing going here."

Seattle could not get anything going. The Sonics got no closer than 16 points and trailed by as much as 29 in the second half.

The Clippers improved to 12-5 at the Staples Center, the most home wins -- and games -- of any club. They are 0-5 on the road.

"It is important to win games at home," Gentry said. "Now we have to find a way to win road games. We want to stay over .500."

Barry scored 18 points, Vin Baker added 15 and Gary Payton 14 for the Sonics, who shot 43 percent (35-of-82).
