Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady scored 40 points, including back-to-back baskets at a key moment of the third quarter, as the Orlando Magic snapped a three-game skid with a 105-100 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Mike Miller contributed 15 points and Patrick Ewing added 14 for the Magic, who are in the midst of a six-game road swing. They avoided dropping a fourth straight contest for the first time since January.

With Warriors star Antawn Jamison in foul trouble for most of the game, the Magic were able to build a 61-49 advantage on a technical foul shot by Darrell Armstrong with 10 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter.

The Warriors responded with six straight points, pulling within 61-55 on a jumper by Jamison with 8:46 to play. A dunk by Larry Hughes got Golden State even closer at 67-64 with 5:06 left.

But Miller threw down a dunk to steady the Magic. After missed 3-pointers by Jamison and Jason Richardson, McGrady converted a layup for a four-point lead and moments later drilled a short jumper to make it 73-64.

"I think more guys got involved (tonight)," McGrady said. "The last three games that we lost, it was just me on the offensive end and we didn't get any defensive stops, but tonight we got stops and guys contributed as well."

The Magic took an 80-72 lead into the final 12 minutes and were able to close out their first victory in a week despite some sloppy play down the stretch.

Jamison and Erick Dampier scored 21 points apiece and Hughes added 18 for the Warriors, who dropped their fourth straight game. They have lost three of the last four meetings with the Magic in the Bay area.

McGrady scored 13 points in the second period, when the Magic outscored Golden State, 35-22. He set a career high by making 19 shots from the field.

"We are a very difficult team to double when we share the basketball, although Tracy is scoring a ton of points, he sees the floor well and shares the ball," Magic coach Doc Rivers said.

Orlando trailed, 27-25, after 12 minutes but opened the second quarter with an 11-0 burst. Troy Hudson scored four points during the run, including a 20-footer that gave the Magic a nine-point lead.

"We tried," Warriors coach Dave Cowens said. "McGrady's a great player. We tried a couple of people on him, but he was the guy who really hurt us."

The Warriors fought within 42-41 on a free throw by Murphy, but Orlando responded with 10 straight points. McGrady's layup with 2 1/12 minutes to play in the first half put Orlando ahead, 52-41.

Hudson scored 12 points for the Magic, who committed only nine turnovers and shot 46 percent (37-of-80) from the field.

"Any time you get a win, especially on the road, it feels good," Miller said. "We could end up having a pretty good road trip."

Golden State connected on 46 percent (37-of-80) of its shots and had 14 turnovers that led to 19 Orlando points.

"You have to be proud of the way we stated focused and went out there and tried to win the ballgame," Jamison said. "It's just the game of basketball. It was definitely hard, especially when I was sitting on the bench."
