Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Minnesota Timberwolves are enjoying the holiday season.

Wally Szczerbiak scored 10 of his 28 points during a 19-4 run that closed the third quarter and propelled the Timberwolves to their sixth straight victory, a 114-94 triumph over the Sacramento Kings.

Kevin Garnett had a franchise-record 24 rebounds to go with 29 points for Minnesota, which collected a team-record 61 rebounds to post its second six-game winning streak of the season. All six of the Wolves' victories during their current streak have come by double digits.

"I had eight rebounds in each of the last two games, and I didn't like that," said Garnett. "I tell myself that I have to do better and bring energy to the game. There are times that I want the rebounds more, and I chase the ones I can get."

The Timberwolves had 26 more rebounds than Sacramento. They had 56 points in the paint and scored 27 second-chance points.

"Not very often do you outrebound a team by 26 -- especially a good team," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "What can you say about a guy like Kevin Garnett. He goes out and gets 29 points and 24 rebounds. He dominated the paint with his rebounds."

Down by a point midway through the third period, Minnesota controlled the final 6:50 of the quarter and a layup by Loren Woods gave the Timberwolves a commanding 86-72 advantage entering the final 12 minutes.

Terrell Brandon had 14 points and 12 assists for the Wolves, who did not allow Sacramento closer than 11 thereafter.

Sacramento, which received 26 points and nine rebounds from Chris Webber, played with leading-scorer Peja Stojakovic (22.9 ppg), who was a late scratch because of back spasms.

"We didn't play very well," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "Once we started missing shots, we never got the ball back -- and then the floodgates opened."

Without their top gun, the Kings shot just 39.5 percent (34-of-86) and were 2-of-12 from 3-point range.

Garnett fed rookie Rasho Nesterovic for a layup that gave Minnesota the lead for good at 70-68. Garnett, Brandon and Szczerbiak all followed with jumpers that quickly pushed the the Wolves' advantage to eight points.

"We are just moving the ball, playing like a team and showing that we are a force to be reckoned with," Szczerbiak said.

After a free throw by Webber, Szczerbiak and Brandon both hit long jumpers and the lead was double digits.

Nesterovic contributed 11 points for the Timberwolves, who connected on 48 percent (45-of-94) of their shots in overcoming 17 turnovers.

"We came in and made some shots," said Saunders. "We've won six in a row, all by double digits and five of them by almost 20 points. That's a heck of a statement, both offensively and defensively."

Hedo Turkoglu scored 25 points and Doug Christie added 12 for Sacramento, which committed 15 miscues that led to 18 Minnesota points.

"You can't blame it on not having Peja," said Webber. "You have to blame it on not executing, and letting them run amok on the rebounds and everything else."
