Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- In a game befitting two struggling teams, Jimmy Jackson hit a 3-pointer with one second remaining to give the Miami Heat a 76-73 victory over the Houston Rockets, who suffered their 13th straight loss.

A bizzare sequence unfolded as the Miami players streamed on the court, thinking the game was over. While Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich argued for a technical foul, the officials allowed the Rockets to inbound again.

Houston was out of timeouts and had to inbound underneath its own basket. Moochie Norris missed a desperation mid-court heave at the buzzer.

"Until last night, we had nine consecutive games like this," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "It takes its toll on players and the team. My heart goes out to Rudy and their team because it's tough."

Eddie Jones scored 19 points for the Heat, who posted just their second road win of the season and have split six games since ending a 12-game losing streak. Miami was coming off Friday's 95-86 home loss to the New Jersey Nets.

Despite a sore groin, Kenny Thomas had a career-high 26 points and 11 rebounds for the Rockets, who matched their longest losing streak in 23 years. Houston has lost nine games this season by five points or less, including three in a row.

The Rockets were coming off a 108-106 overtime loss at Indiana on Thursday.

"They're all tough," Tomjanovich said. "I want them off the schneid so bad, maybe I'm trying too hard, but you can't have five guys out of the lineup and expect to be the same. We don't have one guy out. We have a whole bunch of guys out."

The Rockets tied the contest, 73-73, on Cuttino Mobley's finger roll with 6.9 seconds remaining.

"I could have sworn we were gonna win the game," Mobley said. "You've always got to thing win but something's always going wrong. I'm sick of this. It seems like it's never going to end. It's crazy. I don't know what else to say."

After Houston took a foul, Jackson inbounded to Jones, who moved toward the baseline. He passed out to Jackson, who was wide open on the left wing and hit his only 3-pointer of the game.

"Coach set up the play with Eddie either going inside to Alonzo (Mourning) or to drive and pass out of the double-team if he saw me open," said Jackson, who scored 15 points. "I didn't even think about it. You have to do what you're taught to do -- catch and shoot."

"When Houston doubled down and I saw it, I knew Jimmy would be open," Jones added. "I didn't question the shot until I saw it because I was going to the boards."

Houston forward Oscar Torres was supposed to guard Jackson and admitted through an interpreter that it was his fault.

"The play was to switch up and my role was to go help and then shoot back, but I returned too late and he had an open shot," Torres said.

After Mobley's two foul shots pulled Houston within 71-69 with 2:06 left, Jones' driving layup gave Miami a four-point lead with 1:06 to go. Thomas' jumper with 48 seconds remaining again pulled the Rockets within two.

"It's another disappointing game," Tomjanovich said. "We played our hearts out again. Both teams are struggling to get a win."

Miami shot 44 percent (34-of-77) from the field and attemped just 10 foul shots, making seven. Houston shot 40 percent (32-of-80) and was 10-of-14 from the line.

The contest was close throughout, with neither team leading by more than eight. Miami led 37-35 at the half and 55-53 entering the final period.
