Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- With two of their core players sidelined, the remaining Portland Trail Blazers needed to play their best game of the season and did.

Rasheed Wallace recorded season highs of 37 points and 13 rebounds and Ruben Patterson added a season-high 24 points to lead the Trail Blazers to a 117-106 victory over the Orlando Magic.

Portland has been struggling without Bonzi Wells, its second-leading scorer, who is nursing a swollen left knee. Scottie Pippen was placed on the injured list Friday with a sore knee, but the rest of the Blazers picked up the slack.

Wallace scored 18 points and Derek Anderson added seven of his 18 in the first half as Portland led by as many as 16 points before heading into halftime with a 52-44 lead.

The Blazers, among the league's worst 3-point shooting teams in the league, made a season-high 10 3-pointers on 15 attempts.

"Defensively we didn't play that great, but they made some threes that break your back," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "They're good, but 10-for-15 behind the three, we didn't see that coming, and I don't know if they did either."

Portland maintained the lead by making 6-of-8 3-pointers in the third quarter led by Wallace, who drained all three of his attempts.

"When he's making shots like that, he's tough to guard," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "He's a big buy on the perimeter, it makes it easy for us when he's making shots like that."

"I was just going out there and taking open shots," said Wallace, who made 15-of-26 shots overall. "Just taking what they were giving me, nothing more, nothing less. It was a team effort, one man can't win this game."

The Magic made a 6-0 run in the fourth quarter to climb within 98-96 on a 3-pointer by Tracy McGrady with 5:05 left.

After the teams traded baskets, reserve guard Steve Kerr nailed a jumper with 3:27 remaining and Patterson added a huge 3-pointer 59 seconds later to make it 103-96 and Orlando got no closer.

"Ruben is a scary guy," Cheeks said. "We don't really run plays for him, but just let him respond to the flow of the game. He made some big plays."

Damon Stoudamire had 18 points and 10 assists and Kerr finished with 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting for Portland, which won for just the second time in six games.

"Everybody I put out there made a contribution," Cheeks said. "One guy does something and it rubs off on the next guy."

McGrady, who had scored 40 points in three of his previous four games, had 36 points and a season-high nine assists. Mike Miller scored 18 points and Troy Hudson added 15 for Orlando, which has lost five straight meetings with Portland.

"I'm really proud of the way they played and fought back into it and had a chance to win against a team that was on fire," Rivers said. "It's just tough when you get into a hole on the road and have to fight out of it. If we had better defense, we wouldn't have been in that hole.

The Blazers shot a season-high 56 percent (44-of-78) and made 19-of-25 free throws.

The Magic made 10-of-19 3-pointers led by McGrady, who made 5-of-7 from behind the arc. They made 24-of-29 free throws but shot just 43 percent (36-of-82) overall.

Portland never trailed and reeled off 11 straight points to build a 27-11 cushion with 2:05 left in the first quarter. Wallace made the first two baskets of the burst and Anderson scored the final seven points.

The Blazers had a 30-16 lead after the first quarter and held a 49-33 advantage before Orlando went on an 11-0 run of its own to close the gap. McGrady dominated the stretch with nine points and his layup brought the Magic within 49-44 with 40 seconds left.

Stoudamire nailed a 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining in the first half to send Portland into halftime.
