Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Rookie Shane Battier had 21 points and nine rebounds and nailed a jumper with 10 seconds remaining to lift the Memphis Grizzlies to their first win in Madison Square Garden, a 90-88 victory over the struggling New York Knicks.

The Grizzlies were winless in five trips to the Garden while residing in Vancouver. But much has been changing for the franchise since the arrival of Battier and fellow rookie Pau Gasol.

Battier already has become one of the leaders of a Memphis team that has few established veterans. He was the first option on the Grizzlies' final possession.

"We tried to get him the ball and he was very aggressive," said Memphis coach Sidney Lowe. "Their post players were playing great, physical defense and we couldn't get anything inside. We were trying to clear him up for an open shot."

Battier used a pick from teammate Stromile Swift to free himself from Latrell Sprewell and received the inbounds pass from Grant Long along the left sideline. He did not hesitate and drained a 17-footer to give Memphis the lead.

"We executed just as we had planned in the timeout," Battier said. "Jason (Williams) was a decoy and Stromile set a great screen on my man. I was shocked to see how open I was. I was expecting to see Spree or Allan Houston to fly at me, but I had a good look at it."

The Knicks (12-14) missed five shots on their final possession, including three by Marcus Camby, and fell to 2-5 under coach Don Chaney.

"You can't point to the last possession," Houston said. "We need to point to the first quarter, second quarter, even a lot of the third quarter. You can't leave it up to a bounce in a game like this."

"There was a total lack of energy and aggression," Chaney said. "All losses are bad, it's hard to put a rating on them, they are all bad. This was an opportunity for us to get to .500 and we didn't step up."

The Grizzlies (6-19) not only snapped a losing skid in New York but won for just the second time in 13 road games this season. They also won in Philadelphia on December 2.

"We will take (wins) any way we can get them at this point in the season," Battier said. "It is always special to win at the Garden. It is such a magical place."

Swift had 15 points and seven rebounds and Gasol added 14 and eight for the Grizzlies, who snapped a five-game slide and are 3-8 all-time against the Knicks.

Houston finished with 25 points and combined with Sprewell to score all 23 of New York's points in the fourth quarter.

"We could've easily won if we played 40 minutes the way we did in the fourth quarter," Sprewell said. "Guys weren't focused team-wide."

Memphis seized control with a 9-0 run in the third quarter, turning a 44-43 lead into a 10-point cushion. The Grizzlies had a 64-56 advantage before reeling off five straight points to take their largest lead, 69-56, with 2:26 left.

The Knicks scored the final six points of the period to pull within 74-65 and opened the final period in similar fashion.

Sprewell scored the first nine points and tied it, 74-74, on a pair of free throws with 9:40 to go. Houston's jumper with 3:09 left gave the Knicks an 85-80 lead, but Memphis responded with eight straight points.

Long sparked the run with a 3-pointer and Gasol tied it on a pair of free throws before Williams drained a 3-pointer to make it 88-85 with 74 seconds left.

Houston tied it with a 3-pointer 17 seconds later and the teams traded fruitless possessions before Battier came through in the clutch.

"I think our guys showed a lot of heart and character," Lowe said. "Our guys hung in there. It was a great effort and more impressive to win here."
