Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- A winless West Coast trip brought the Detroit Pistons down to earth.

Gary Payton scored 20 points as the Seattle SuperSonics cruised to a 117-89 victory over the Pistons, who suffered their season-high fifth straight loss.

Detroit took to the road as the surprise leader in the Eastern Conference at 14-6. But the Pistons found different ways to lose each game and completed their first-ever winless West Coast swing.

The Pistons opened the trip with a fourth-quarter collapse against the Los Angeles Clippers. They were beaten by Sacramento on Tuesday, got blown out by Golden State the following night and fell apart in the final period on Friday against Portland.

Detroit wilted in the second quarter Saturday, getting outscored, 31-15, and losing leading scorer Jerry Stackhouse, who was ejected for arguing with referee Leon Wood.

At the time, Stackhouse had 18 points. He scored 14 of the Pistons' first 16.

"Things got a little bit out of hand," Detroit coach Rick Carlisle said. "We talked about it at halftime and I thought the guys came out in the second half and played the right way. Those things are going to happen. We addressed it and we'll move on."

Stackhouse made a 17-footer that got the Pistons within 33-29 with just over nine minutes left before halftime. But the Sonics scored the next eight points and never looked back.

Seattle, which blew a 22-point halftime lead in Friday's 111-108 overtime victory over Golden State, shot 63 percent (19-of-30) in a 55-point second half.

"I thought the Sonics played great," Carlisle said. "I know they play great in this building and I know they shoot the ball well in this building. We certainly didn't bring our `A' game, but they brought a game that was `A-plus.' They really did it on both ends of the court."

It also was the second time in the last three weeks that an opponent's top player was ejected. In a 107-92 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on November 30, Shaquille O'Neal was tossed in the first quarter.

Seattle improved to 14-15 and snapped a eight-game losing streak in the second half of back-to-back contests.

"It was like getting two victories tonight," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said. "We played as we did in the first half last night. Defensively, we were solid. Our rotations were crisp and we got to the ball well. When we have good ball movement, like we did tonight, we can score a lot.

"I really like our defense the last couple of games. We've extended our defense, maybe because we have our legs under us. Having some days to rest, allowing us to get ready for the games has helped. Whenever you play defense the way we have, then your offensive rhythm will come."

Seattle placed six players in double figures. Rookie Vladimir Radmanovic scored 18 points Art Long added a career-high 13.

Radmanovic replaced Vin Baker in the starting lineup and made three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Baker, who sprained his right thumb against Golden State, is listed as day-to-day.

"Our main thing was to come out and get a win," Seattle forward Desmond Mason said. "We knew our record was 0-8 in back-to-back games. Everyone came out and played solid defense. We had a lot of young guys and it was a fun game."
