Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki scored 24 points as the Dallas Mavericks overcame the loss of Michael Finley and extended their season-high winning streak to eight games with an 89-74 victory over the hapless Chicago Bulls.

Nowitzki had 21 points in the first quarter, helping the Mavericks open a 32-20 lead. They never trailed thereafter and matched their longest winning streak since February 14-March 4, 1988.

Finley played a career-low three minutes before leaving with a pulled left hamstring, but the Bulls could not take advantage of his absence, falling to 0-2 under interim coach Bill Berry.

"He tweaked his hamstring a little bit against San Antonio (on Wednesday)," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "He felt a little twinge tonight, so we got him out of there. It is very minor. We are going to be very careful with him."

Chicago has called a news conference for Friday at 4:00 p.m. EST at their practice facility in Dearfield, Illinois, when the team is expected to name former Bull and current assistant Bill Cartwright as Floyd's replacement for the remainder of the season.

The Bulls suffered a 105-87 loss at Memphis on Wednesday in Berry's debut.

"Defensively, we were better than we were last night," Berry said. "That was very encouraging thing to see. We had weak side help. Overall, the defense was better. The transition defense, the fast-break defense was a little spotty at times, but better than last night as well."

Dallas survived a nightmarish second quarter, when the teams went nearly four minutes without scoring and combined for just 25 points.

The Mavericks scored only 11 in the period on 25 percent shooting (5-of-20). But the Bulls managed only 14 points and shot just 29 percent (6-of-21).

"It was ugly," said guard Tim Hardaway, who scored seven points off the bench for the Mavericks. "We wanted to come in and beat them convincingly, get everybody in and have some fun. It didn't happen that way, but we got the 'W'. That's all that counts."

Eduardo Najera recorded a double-double for Dallas with 15 points and 14 rebounds, both career highs.

"Najera to the rescue once again," Nelson said. "What a game, a career high in rebounds and points. He is just growing with every game, getter better and better. Tonight, we actually used him as a defensive stopper and he did a really nice job in the fourth quarter."

Steve Nash handed out a season-high 14 assists for the Mavericks, who were coming off Wednesday's 126-123 overtime victory over the Spurs.

"We were physically and emotionally drained and it showed," Hardaway said. "That's the way it is sometimes. Hopefully, next Wednesday when we go up there (to Chicago) and play them, we'll be more enthused."

Najera made all seven of his shots in 34 minutes off the bench.

"Obviously, I thought I played solid, nothing fancy, just doing what the coaches wanted me to do," Najera said. "I did my job pretty well. I got some wide-open looks. I took them and they just went in. The main thing is that we won the game. We knew that we had to come out and put in a lot of energy, especially since our very tough game last night."

Ron Mercer scored 19 points and Ron Artest added 13 for the Bulls, who have lost eight straight. Only three of those defeats have been by fewer than 10 points.

The Mavericks held Chicago to just 38 percent shooting (28-of-73) and converted 24 turnovers into 27 points.

"We made too many mistakes," Artest said. "I know that I took about seven bad shots. We probably could have had this game. Nowitzki wasn't scoring anymore toward the end, but we were still turning the ball over. We just made too many mistakes."

The Bulls closed to 45-40 on Artest's jumper with 8:40 left in the third quarter, but Dallas reeled off seven straight points to open a 52-40 lead on Nash's 20-footer with 6:25 remaining in the period.

Dailbor Bagaric hit two foul shots with 18 seconds to go, pulling Chicago within 63-56 after the third period. Again the Mavericks responded, scoring the first six points of the final quarter to go up 69-56 on Nowitzki's free throw with 9:07 to play.

Dallas opened its biggest lead, 86-67, on Juwan Howard's jumper with 3:27 remaining.
