Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Lamond Murray's back is just fine.

Murray scored a career-high 40 points in his first game in 10 days as the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Golden State Warriors for the 11th straight time at home, 113-98.

Murray, who missed three games with a lower back strain, made 16-of-23 shots, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range. He helped the Cavaliers remain unbeaten at home against the Warriors since November 28, 1990.

"I didn't feel any pain out there except when I got a rest and came back in," Murray said. "It felt a litle stiff, but other than that it felt fine."

"We really missed Lamond," Cleveland coach John Lucas said. "He's been an X factor for us, and without him out (there) we didn't have enough shot making on the court."

Murray's explosion was the first 40-point game by a Cav since the late Bobby Phills scored 43 in a double-overtime contest vs. Portland on December 30, 1995.

"I knew I had a career high," Murray said. "I got the board up there, so I knew I had 40 and I just raised my hands. Anytime you can come out and score a career-high 40 points and win the game, that's big time."

"We had no answer for him," Warriors coach Brian Winters said. "He came off screens and got open and made every shot he took. He plays against our guys in the fall and he grew up in the Bay area. I knew he would have a good game."

Wesley Person scored 18 points, Chris Mihm added 13 and Andre Miller 12 and 14 assists for Cleveland, which bounced back from a 23-point setback to lowly Chicago on Saturday.

After Adonal Foyle hit two free throws to give Golden State a 74-72 lead with 3:57 to go in the third quarter, Person hit a 3-pointer to start a 23-4 run into the final period.

The Warriors did not score until Larry Hughes hit a free throw with 6:26 left. By that time the Cavs led, 95-79.

Antawn Jamison scored 24 points for Golden State, which began a road trip of four games in five nights. Five other Warriors reached double figures, including rookie Jason Richardson, who scored 13 points.

Murray erupted for 15 points in the first quarter, which ended with Cleveland's Jumaine Jones banking in a heave from beyond halfcourt for a 31-16 lead.

"Once I threw it up there, I knew it was going to be close," Jones said. "I just wanted it to reach the rim and luckily it banked in."

"The shots were falling in the first quarter," Murray said. "I just tried to mix it up and get to the basket, shoot the jump shot and give them something to think about."

Jones left the game with 3:57 remaining in the third quarter after colliding with Foyle and having his head accidentally kicked by Hughes. He received six stitches, returned with 5:49 left and promptly hit a 3-pointer.

"I got six stitches in my head," Jones said. "I got a knee in the head after I hit the floor and someone told me it was Richardson who came by."

"The night was typified by them making that long three by Jones at the end of the first quarter, and then Jones comes in dead cold and hits a three in the corner on a kind of freak play," Winters said. "He's that cold and makes that, and then we get a bunch of shots around the basket and did not finish."

The Cavs took a 54-50 lead into halftime as Murray scored 25 points.

"That was a pretty easy 40 points he scored, not much resistance," Warriors guard Bobby Sura said. "He's a rhythm type of player, and once he gets it going early he's going to have some big nights like that."
