Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- There were no incidents between Vince Carter and Charles Oakley and the Chicago Bulls didn't put up much of fight in this one.

Carter had 19 points and Antonio Davis added 17 as the Toronto Raptors posted their 12th consecutive victory over the Bulls, 85-73.

In the last meeting, a 96-90 Raptors victory at the Air Canada Centre on December 20, the game was overshadowed by a flagrant foul delivered by Oakley to Carter. The two were teammates last season.

Carter scored 13 of his 33 points after the foul. In this one, there wasn't any rough stuff and the Raptors controlled the second half while shooting 48 percent (36-of-75) overall.

Toronto took control with an 11-4 run that turned a 29-26 lead into a 40-30 advantage with just over a minute before halftime. Carter's running jumper capped the surge and Toronto was never seriously threatened thereafter.

Davis scored nine points in the first half as Toronto shot 51 percent (19-of-37) and took a 42-32 lead at intermission.

"I thought he didn't hesitate tonight," Toronto coach Lenny Wilkens said. "It's the kind of play we need from him. He just needs to play and can't worry about missing his shot."

Ron Artest, who was matched up with Carter, paced the Bulls with 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting. But Chicago shot just under 36 percent (29-of-81) and dropped its fifth straight game.

The Bulls had a chance when Carter twisted his ankle with 10:30 remaining. Artest hit a layup, jumper and a foul shot to cut it 71-67 with 5:09 left.

Carter was hurt when he collided with Marcus Fizer in the low post. He limped off slowly with the Raptors up by 10 points.

After the Bulls pulled within four points, Wilkens put his hands up in frustration and sent back Carter, who nailed a tough turnaround jumper over Artest that made it 73-67.

"I don't think any of my shots were the catalyst or difference in the game," said Carter, who shot 7-of-21. "Lenny just said go back in and play. The first play they called my number and I had to do something. Tonight everybody stepped up. It was a team effort and we knew we needed to win tonight.

"At the end of the game, we were able to start running. We got in the groove and forced them to foul. We're not just a fast break or halfcourt team. We always want to play our best but it doesn't always happen. Let's see if this win picks us up.

Fizer's jumper made it 73-71 with 3:50 left. But Alvin Williams made a jumper and an easy layup as the Raptors closed with a 10-2 run.

"We have to watch films tomorrow and figure out what we are doing wrong," Fizer said. "The last drive Oak kicked it to me and I made the shot to put us down by two with two minutes to go. We have got to get better at closing."

With the Bulls trailing, 77-71, with 2:47 left, Artest took an ill-advised 3-pointer that fell short. He then missed 3-of-4 foul shots before fouling out.

"We got it right there," said Bulls coach Bill Cartwright. "We could not get that final stop.

"We kept them in the 80s and did defensively what we had to do to win. We just did not hit shots. We have to come in and finish the game off."
