Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Shareef Abdur-Rahim passed up a wide-open, potential game-winning jumper in the closing seconds of regulation. Alvin Williams did not waste the same opportunity in overtime.

Williams scored a career-high 28 points and nailed a 3-pointer with two seconds left to give the Toronto Raptors a 94-91 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

The Raptors led by as many as nine points early in the fourth quarter but made just 5-of-18 shots in the period. Abdur-Rahim scored 14 points in the final 11 minutes of regulation and had a chance to take a baseline jumper in the closing seconds, but instead passed to Emanual Davis, who missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Toronto's offense awoke in overtime led by Williams, who drained a jumper followed by a runner that gave the Raptors a 91-88 lead with 55 seconds left. Davis responded with a 3-pointer 12 seconds later to tie it.

Vince Carter missed a baseline jumper on the Raptors' next possession and Hakeem Olajuwon tried an unsuccessful follow dunk before Jason Terry pulled down the rebound. Harassed by Olajuwon, Terry called timeout and the Hawks inbounded with 13 seconds left.

Unaware that the Hawks had just three seconds to cross the time line, Terry failed to make it in time and the Raptors regained possession with 10 seconds to play.

"There was a lot of confusion," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "We were told we could advance the ball to half-court during the timeout, but when we came back we weren't allowed. We had drawn up the play during the timeout to take it from the half. We were not allowed, therefore we rushed to get it in."

Vince Carter drew a triple-team to the left sideline before finding a wide-open Williams, who nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the circle.

"I knew I had time," Williams said. "You have to be prepared to take the shot when you have a guy like Vince because he draws a lot of attention. I was really wide open."

"I took the initiative to take the ball as far as I could," Carter said. "It was a quick reaction. I saw a white shirt, I knew it was Alvin and I threw it."

Abdur-Rahim, who was held scoreless in the overtime, missed a half-court shot at the horn.

Carter had 16 points, nine rebounds and eight assists and Olajuwon tied a season-high with 16 points in his third game back from a toe injury. He also scored 16 points in Atlanta on December 1.

Olajuwon grabbed 11 rebounds and Antonio Davis added 14 points and 13 boards for Toronto, which held a 54-42 rebounding advantage. The Raptors have won eight of their last 12 since a four-game slide ended on December 16.

"We've been pressing a little and we've been struggling, but guys are getting back," Raptors coach Lenny Wilkens said. "(Olajuwon) will be back in shape in one or two games. The key is to win and all our players were part of the win."

Abdur-Rahim finished with 26 points and 16 rebounds and Terry added 20, six rebounds and six assists. Nazr Mohammed chipped in 12 points off the bench for the Hawks, who have lost eight of 12.

Toronto took a 70-61 lead into the fourth period, but Atlanta opened with an 11-4 surge to pull within 74-72 with 8:29 left.

The Raptors extended the lead to 81-74 with 6:08 to go, but the Hawks responded with seven straight points. Abdur-Rahim opened the burst with a turnaround jumper and tied it, 81-81, on a pair of free throws with 2:05 remaining.

Toronto missed four shots over its next two possessions before Abdur-Rahim grabbed a rebound off a miss by Antonio Davis. He was fouled and sank two free throws to give Atlanta an 83-81 lead with 29 seconds left.

But Olajuwon tied it 21 seconds later, using a spin move to get around Mohammed for a layup. Olajuwon nailed a jumper with 1.8 seconds left to lift Toronto to its victory in Atlanta on December 1.

Abdur-Rahim was given the ball on the Hawks' final possession and drove baseline, knocking Davis to the floor. With his defender on the ground, Abdur-Rahim did not take the shot, leaving his team's fate to an extra five minute.

"I didn't know I was that open," he said. "I was off-balance and didn't know I had that kind of shot until I passed the ball."
