Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- This time, Kenyon Martin stuck around long enough to make a difference.

Kerry Kittles nailed a huge 3-pointer with 47 seconds left and Martin stifled Tracy McGrady down the stretch as the New Jersey Nets dominated the final minutes en route to a 91-85 victory over the Orlando Magic.

Martin and McGrady were facing each for the first time since last Friday's game at New Jersey. Martin committed a flagrant foul on the Magic superstar swingman in the fourth quarter that earned him an ejection and two-game suspension.

There were strong words from both players leading up to the rematch, but no fireworks. In the end, Martin's teammates came up much bigger that McGrady's.

The Magic had an 80-77 advantage after McGrady's basket with 6:32 to go before the Nets rallied.

New Jersey responded with eight straight points to take the lead for good. Keith Van Horn opened the stretch with a dunk and Jason Kidd sank a pair of free throws to give the Nets an 81-80 edge.

Kidd and Van Horn made consecutive baskets to give New Jersey and 85-80 cushion with 1:52 remaining.

McGrady made 1-of-2 free throws with 1:40 to play and missed a jumper 29 seconds later before Kittles nailed the clincher from the left baseline off a pass from Martin.

"We just tried to hang in there and keep the pressure on them and challenge them," Kittles said. "They did a good job of fighting back and making it a good game and we were fortunate enough to pull it out."

Mike Miller made a 3-pointer just seven seconds later for the Magic's only basket in the final 6 1/2 minutes. Kidd missed a contested jumper with 20 seconds left but got the ball back after Kittles tapped it out.

The Nets sank 3-of-4 free throws in the final 17 seconds to seal the win.

"We did what we had to do," Martin said. "We had to get some stops and a couple of buckets. We went out and we just picked it up."

McGrady was guarded by Martin throughout and made just 1-of-6 shots and 2-of-4 free throws in the fourth quarter. Nursing a sore groin, he finished with 17 points on 6-of-20 shooting and added 12 rebounds and seven assists.

Lucious Harris scored 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting and Kittles added 15 for New Jersey, which held Orlando to 8-of-22 shooting in the fourth.

"Lucious was fantastic off the bench, he was hitting shots," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "Every time they made a run, he seemed to counter it."

Martin had 10 points and nine rebounds and was booed by the crowd everytime he touched the ball.

"That was nice," he said. "It showed they were thinking about me. I was on their mind for about a week now. I'm just glad we won. If we wouldn't have won, it wouldn't have been as great."

McGrady refused to shake hands after the loss, prompting Martin to call the superstar immature.

Van Horn collected 15 points and 11 rebounds and Kidd totaled 14 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for New Jersey, which has won four straight games and eight of 10.

Pat Garrity scored 17 points and Horace Grant added 16 for the Magic, who have lost consecutive games after winning six of seven.

Mike Miller and Darrell Armstrong combined for just 12 points on 4-of-22 shooting as Orlando shot only 38 percent (34-of-89).

"Me and Mike Miller could have been the difference with knocking down some shots," Armstrong said. "It was one of those games you get too ready for. All the hype, Tracy, Kenyon Martin. Sometimes you get so geeked up for the game, you don't play as well as you need to play."

"Instead of giving you Ali-Frazier, I don't know what the (heck) that was," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "Both teams were flat, it was a horrible game to watch. It was a passive game. They made a couple big shots down the stretch and that was the difference."

New Jersey shot only 37 percent (31-of-86) but made 24-of-29 free throws compared to just 11-of-18 for Orlando.
